OK. I've used them here and now for domestic travel,,,,,but now my 20 year old daughter is stuck in Athens (and will miss four connecting flights back to the west coast of the USA) because a flight booked through them was canceled. Shit happens. Get it. Yet, after (now over) 6 hours on the phone with what they call customer service (obviously 99.9% of that on hold) I'm getting a little exasperated. This was booked months ago (a little travelling after a semester in Madrid) and she's almost broke. We're almost broke after helping subsidize the semester in Madrid.

Are we just fucked? Buy whatever flight will get her to NYC to make her connecting flights?

@ExpatAkronite, unfortunately, you've gotten a ringside seat to observing "Customer Service" as practiced by the monopolistic OTA (online travel agent) that is Expedia. Unfortunately they've now purchased Orbitz, so one potential check-and-balance has evaporated. Now all we got is Priceline-Travelocity to counterweight Expedia, and they're like leaving the fry pan to jump into the fire. Neither one, IOW, is worth jack squat.

Bottom line, though, is that your ultimate contract is with the airline, not Expedia. Call the airline that issued the ticket and start squawking.

Well, my daughter is still stuck in Athens and apparently they are no longer accepting American debit cards. After another couple hours on the phone with Expedia--making that about 10 hours total-- (and Ukraine International Airlines doesn't answer the phone)I threatened to drive to their corporate offices--a couple hours from me. And resolve this. Crickets. And bring a gun. Crickets. I've been expecting a SWAT team for a couple hours (note, neither of the two guns I own have been fired in 30 plus years, I'm not even exactly sure where in the basement they are.) So, maybe I should call the local news and wrap (a fashionably silk) scarf around my face?

Just sayin': Hope she got home safe and sound.

A lot of these airline/hotel booking websites do not have great followup service; and what they do have is usually done "off shore" in a 3rd world country (ex. Philippines).

Thanks. After being stuck for three days in Athens (with most businesses no longer accepting foreign debit cards and ATM's out of cash) she got out on a Turkish airline. The embassy was actually very proactive and kept us up to date. Nice to see my taxes at work. Will never use a third party for foreign travel again. And how companies like Expedia are profitable is beyond me.
