So, is it merely a coincidence that Withers (present at UNC during their NCAA infractions) would be announced one day after the NCAA announced its ruling on OSU?

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina interim coach Everett Withers is heading to Ohio State to become Urban Meyer's co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.Withers had acknowledged he was a candidate to join the Meyer's new staff last week and confirmed it was a done deal Wednesday.
"We've known each other for a couple years," Withers said of Meyer. "A few years ago we talked when the Florida defensive coordinator job came open. So we've got a little bit of a past and I'm looking forward to the future with coach Meyer."

A Closer Look at Everett Withers
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State hired a head coach who knows a whole lot about success, but Urban Meyer is making sure to surround himself with assistants know just as much about adversity.
If it wasn't enough to retain Luke Fickell, the Buckeyes' interim coach for the 2011 season, Meyer has also added former North Carolina defensive coordinator Everett Withers to his new coaching staff in Columbus.

Ohio State officially announced Meyer's decision Wednesday to add Withers as the team's associate head coach, along with co-defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes next season.
Some see the move as a second choice for Meyer after Ohio State seemingly could not work out a deal with former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops. In reality, Withers is a guy Meyer has been targeting for some time now.
"Urban Meyer made a run at Withers a couple of years ago to replace Charlie Strong as Florida's defensive coordinator a couple of years ago, so clearly he likes what Withers has to offer," said Adam Powell, who covers North Carolina football for the 247 Sports site Carolina Blue.
moreCHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Everett Withers grew up in Charlotte wanting to play football at North Carolina, never imagining that one day he would be the Tar Heels? coach. So when the opportunity came, when North Carolina named Withers its interim coach after firing Butch Davis before this season, it was, in some ways, like a dream.
But that dream ends today. Withers will coach the Tar Heels for the final time when they play Missouri in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. He will then return to the assistant ranks, serving as assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator under Urban Meyer at Ohio State.
Withers gave the impression last week that he will leave with plenty of stories, good and bad ? as well as some he?s not necessarily ready to share yet. He smiled when asked to reflect on his brief tenure as North Carolina coach.
?I have no doubt it?ll be positive? when I look back on it, he said. ?I?ll be looking to get that book deal one day and write a book.?
He said it jokingly, but if Withers indeed wanted to sit down one day and put the past 41/2 months of his life on paper ? or even the past 18 months ? there wouldn?t be a shortage of compelling stories.
Withers became Tar Heels coach on July 28, one day after the university fired Davis amid an NCAA investigation into impermissible benefits and academic fraud that forced 14 players to serve suspensions of varying length during the 2010 season. But center
Withers had just days to prepare the Tar Heels for the start of preseason practice and to juggle his coaching staff.
North Carolina, meanwhile, characterized Withers? promotion as what the program needed to move forward. And so, amid his rushed preparations for the start of the season, he became a public-relations symbol, representative of a new beginning.
All the while, Withers embraced his new role without ever knowing what his job status might be beyond this season. He wouldn?t say last week whether it had been strange, building a bridge from one era of Tar Heels football to another without knowing what awaited him on the other side.
?It has been a very good learning experience,? he said simply.
One of Withers? players, though, spoke for him.
?I can?t even imagine what he has gone through,? quarterback Bryn Renner said. ?But I know he?s done a great job. And he?s been a father figure to this team this whole year, (and shown us) how to handle adversity.?
University administrators, from chancellor Holden Thorp to new athletic director Bubba Cunningham, told Withers that he would have a chance to earn the coaching job on a permanent basis. Cunningham made it clear, though, that he intended to embark on a national coaching search.
Q&A: Ohio State assistant Everett Withers
January, 17, 2012
By Adam Rittenberg
Of the two coordinators Urban Meyer brought in from the outside, Tom Herman likely will get more attention from Ohio State fans. It makes sense. Buckeyes fans are anxious to see the team's new direction on offense, and Herman along with Meyer will shape the vision. Everett Withers, meanwhile, comes to Columbus with a different mission: restore Ohio State's defense to elite levels. After producing a top 15 defense for six consecutive seasons, Ohio State slipped to 19th in 2011 and 27th in points allowed -- not bad numbers by any means but not typical for a Buckeyes defense. Withers, a veteran defensive coordinator who spent the 2011 season as North Carolina's interim coach, will lead Ohio State's defense with Luke Fickell.
ESPN.com caught up with Withers last week, and here are some thoughts from the new Ohio State co-defensive coordinator/assistant head coach/safeties coach.

Everett Withers looks to restore Ohio State's defense to its once elite level.
Why Ohio State?
Everett Withers: Just the opportunity to work on a staff that's well-respected across the country, an opportunity to work with Coach Meyer. It is The Ohio State University, so I think it's a great opportunity. As you go through this profession, you get few opportunities to work at places that are in that top four or five
What's your perception of Ohio State's defense over the years as somebody who has coached defense around the country?
EW: It's been very stout. Very good versus the run. There's been a number of talented players at all positions at Ohio State. The mystique of this place being good on defense is something that's in the minds of a lot of people who know college football. Hopefully, we can continue that, continue to build on it.
What do you think it will be like working with Coach Fickell as coordinators?
EW: It'll be a great, great experience for me. I don't go into jobs with a lot of ego. I'd like to find a way to win, and if we're all working toward the same goal, that's the key. I've been very impressed with what Coach Fickell has done in the past here, and what he's doing here now.
You were in a tough situation as an interim coach last year with Carolina, and he was in a similar situation [at Ohio State]. Have you talked about those experiences at all?
EW: You know, we haven't spent a whole lot of time. We've been really beating the recruiting trail up and trying to get to know each other defensively. But I'm sure one day when we get some down time, we'll be able to talk about some similar experiences.
