Ever lose a wheel while driving?

  • On my way to the Pro Football HOF today, some poor bastard in a pickup in front of me lost his front wheel doing about 60 mph. I slowed down and watched the tire bounce down the hill, while this guy tried not to wipe out. He managed to pull over, I stopped to see if he was alright. He got out of his truck, and lit a smoke with his hands shaking. He didn't seem drunk but he was adamant that he didn't want me to call anyone. I helped him look for his wheel for a few minutes but it had to be in the gigantic corn field at the bottom of the hill. He actually thought he was going to put it back on what was left of his wheel.

Not sure how that worked out for him but on my way home he was gone and so was the truck. I thought for sure he was going to lose control when I saw the sparks flying.

Haven't seen that, but I had a big UHaul (22') blow a tire right in front of me last Sunday on I-40 by Greensboro. The noise scared the crap out of me. He was in one of the middle two lanes of a 4 lane area. I have no idea how he was able to bring the thing to a slow down and get off to the side of the road as the traffic was fairly heavy...I have to give the guy credit and those around him for recognizing the situation....

A couple years back, headed south on 71, just beyond 161, a truck three lanes to my left lost it's front driver-side tire that bounded along the free way for a bit, caromed left into the divider, and over it into oncoming traffic. Not sure what happened on the other side, but I'm certain it wasn't pretty.

About two years ago, I was on 75-South somewhere between 275 and 562. There was a pickup towing an empty car trailer, the type that's low to the ground with just one small tire on each side, ahead of me by several car lengths. The right wheel of the trailer came off, and there was a huge plume of sparks from the trailer scraping the road. I seem to remember that the pickup driver did a good job of maintaining control and making it to the shoulder, but at the time, I was more concerned about the loose wheel, which was launched about 20' in the air, and started bouncing down the middle of my lane. Luckily, traffic was light enough that I could adjust my speed to drive under it as it bound down the highway. It was like something out of Super Mario Bros.

The craziest thing I've seen on 75 was a few years earlier, closer to downtown, and late at night. I saw something in my rear-view which looked like a tow truck or other utility vehicle coming up fast in the lane to the left of me. As it got closer, I realized it was a passenger car, and what I thought were yellow flashing lights was really a raging engine fire. I mean there were flames pouring out of the grill big enough that they were blown back over the hood, almost to the windshield. We were the only cars on the road, so I got all the way over to the right, and slowed way the fuck down to let him go past me. I got a good look at the driver as he passed by, he made no attempt to signal for help, and didn't look panicked at all; he was just leaned forward slightly, like a driver who was determined to get to his destination. Since I slowed down to 35-40 MPH, and he was doing over 75, he was out of sight in a few moments, and I never saw any flaming wreckage. I'll always wonder just what the hell that was all about.

I once had a driveshaft fall off my car on 270. That was more dangerous for the folks behind me, I just slowed down gradually and pulled off the road.

Simmilar to BK, I once saw a tire come off a truck about 75 yards in front of me on the farily crowded I-894 outside Milwaukee. It bounced over the divider into oncoming traffic, but by that point it was behind me, so I'm not sure how bad it was.

I was once driving in Quebec province, approaching a lane closure on my side of a 2-lane road with a flagman. There was a big truck hauling 30 to 40-foot logs coming towards us in our lane as we approached the flagman slowly. As he swung back to his own lane, one of the huge logs rolled off the top of his truck and landed in the lane a few feet in front of us. I was moving, so I swerved to the right, farther onto the shoulder, and it missed my car, but hit a van that was right behind us and probably broke its axle.

    .
Not an auto expert but after your drive shaft falls off doesn't the car normally slow down on its own? :paranoid::yow1:

I put a rod through the engine at 65 MPH once. Big explosion, cloud of oil that temporarily brought vision to zero, and some flames up the windshield. I kept going long enough to get into the proper lane and pull over safely, but you sure don't have long before the engine turns into a brick.

It wasn't one of those older style cars, was it? Aren't you supposed to drive faster to put the fire out in those cases? It probably wasn't, but I think I'd freak out either way.

    Elyria Walgreen's

Interesting topic to be on top today.

Saw an Explorer in Elyria hanging over the curb without a wheel and some damage to the side of the car. Should have grabbed a picture. Couldn't tell whether it was a failure (highly unlikely with 4-5 bolts needing to come loose), neglect (again, 4 or 5 bolts), or vandalism (there was no damage to the axle/drivetrain, which I have also seen).

Got a good laugh and a "how the hell does that happen?"

you only need 1 loose lug nut. the rest will eventually break free, probably sooner rather than later.
