Ever heard of the band MGMT?

  • I just won two tickets to see MGMT at Red Rocks in June - trouble is, I've never heard of MGMT...

Anyone opinions of this band? I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble to claim my prize - the radio station emailed me some paperwork to fill out...

    I think it's crap.

They're a pretty popular indie band (do they still qualifiy as an "indie band?" -- can we get a guy that wears girls' jeans in here to judge this issue?). Look up the tune "Kids" and I bet you'll recognize it if you folow music. I'm not a huge fan, but they're not bad, IMO. They recently played spring fling outdoors on Yale's campus here in New Haven. I couldn't make it but my girlfriend and some of her friends went. They left early because the weather was shitty and they said the band didn't sound great live, but that may not be true at a venue like Red Rocks.

They were decent live at The LC...I think they are the type of band that is better live than on CD. I too won tickets and had a decent time at the show, but then again I like pretty much any live music. The band they are most often compared to is probably The Flaming Lips.

Put me in the camp with those who like them.

In addition to "Kids" and "Electric Feel", check out "Time to Pretend".

I haven't heard much of their latest album (Congratulations), but Oracular Spectacular was pretty good.

Good Electronic super poppy funk music. They don't take themselves seriously, and the band is pronounced "management," if you didn't already know.

Also, as said above, "Time to Pretend" is probably their best song so check it out. . . "Electronic Feel" is a bit too Stevie Wonder, and "Kids" is okay.

Radio and everyone I know pronounces it M-G-M-T. Also, their most recent album, Congratulations, is waaaay different from their debut, Oracular Spectacular. OS = 2-man electro-funk-pop. Congrats = full band psychedelic 60's rock with 50's harmonies and vocals.

Many people who liked OS do not like Congrats at all. It has grown on me, but it's definitely a different direction. Check it out first, as they will most likely play more tracks from the newer album, obviously.

I think you're both right. Their first album, Climbing to New Lows, was released under the name The Management. The other two albums are under the name MGMT.
