I've been there multiple times growing up. My mom is from Lux. I spent the better part of every second summer growing up over there. Trips to Paris were part of it. I enjoyed parts of France. I loved going to Versailles... But Paris itself does little for me. I'll go back, but only because my wife likes it.

Give me small towns in Belg, Lux or anything in Germany over Paris any day.

One thing that I've never done that I'd love to do is see the DDay beaches.

Echo the "to each their own" sentiment. Absolutely adore Paris. Had two really great trips there, the people were friendly and the scenery is impressive. The Metro is easy-to-use and gets you where you want to go (or close enough to walk, which is what you should be doing in Paris anyway).




Not sure the OP is still looking for input, but add my voice to the choir of "don't do too many cities at once." You can't do Paris justice on a one-week vacation. Trying to to hit Paris and London in the same trip would be nuts. You'd miss so much.

Pick a spot, spend enough time there to get to really know it, and save the next spot for the next trip.

I would highly recommend picking one or two major cities and spending more time fully enjoying everything they have to offer. Bouncing from country to country is great and all but it's exhausting and unless you have tons of time (months) you just get a little taste of everything, rather than the full experience of certain cultures.

London and Paris are both great and have a ton to do, but are very expensive (London even more so because of the Pound). They each also have several areas around the main city where you can make day trips and see different types of scenery.

I would highly recommend Spain as well. Andalucia (the southern region) is beautiful and you can rent a beach house for a great deal. Look into Marbella or Malaga. Valencia is also gorgeous and more of a city atmosphere if you're looking for a bigger restaurant/night life scene. Barcelona is also nice but the beaches are more crowded and it's more expensive since it's such a huge city.

Appreciate all of the advice. As a wedding present from her Mom, we get Marriott reward points to a 5-6 access hotel. That should equal 5 days worth of hotel fees for free. But that means the major cities (and we both "no hablo"). So far I have gathered: big cities, try to speaka la language, and stay in the same area to enjoy it all.

Anything else?
