European flights cancelling rapidly due to volcano

The volcano in Iceland has ejected considerable ash into the jet stream. Scotland and northern UK airports closed early this morning. Heathrow and Gatwick will be closed by afternoon. Several Scandinavian countries have or will close airports. France is expected to follow this afternoon.

If you have plans to travel to Europe this week and can postpone your trip, it may be wise to consider doing so. The volcano is increasing its ash output and could become a major eruption.

Oh well. At the extreme, the ash could obscure the sun and cause an ice age. THAT would put those pesky global warming enthusiasts in a pickle.

I woke up big time hung over in Kennewick, Washington, one morning in May of 1980.

I vaugely remember finding my way home after a night at the Staggerhorse Inn (think Urban Cowboy with a smaller dance floor and friendlier women....and the damn Red Beer - Olympia and tomato juice. WTF was I thinking?), and I needed a cup or ten of coffee reeeeeeal bad. I walked outside, saw the sky looking a lot like those pictures, about a half inch of grey ash covering the world, and immediately thought that a nuclear strike had occurred while I was passed out.

Freaking St. Helens.

Word here is that things may be this way for some time, not sure how much news coverage you folks are getting...

London - Officials further extended no-fly restrictions over Europe on Saturday as a vast, invisible plume of grit continued to billow out of an Icelandic volcano and drift across the continent.

ORD, he won't be going, unless he goes by rail or some other form of ground transportation from the Med. Most leaders will cancel on this one. If he went, it would be huge for the United States. Of the magnitude of Kennedy in Berlin for the Poles.
