ESPN (A bunch of Death-Spiraling maroons)

ESPN could use more Steve Youngs. If everyone covering football were Steve Young and everyone covering basketball were Jay Bilas, it would be a much better network.

Yesterday, while announcing an early game, Dave Pasch said something very close to these words:

"If it hadn't been for the job that Bill O'Brien has done, Urban Meyer would be able to be considered for Coach of the Year in his conference, and perhaps even nationally."

Yep. A guy that's taken a team that finished 6-7 last year and has them undefeated at this point in the year isn't even able to be CONSIDERED for B1G Coach of the Year because of what Billybob O'ButtCheeks has done for PSU this year.

Somehow, I managed not to throw up.

The sad thing about this is that he didn't have to go as far as he did. It would be perfectly fine to say that O'Brien has done a fantastic job and deserves the award. I would have no issues with that. But to say the coach of an undefeated team (it's obviously OSU in this case, but it could be anyone) shouldn't even be considered is just dumb.

Annnd, you've just described Dave Pasch.

Tessitore was way worse yesterday though. Montee Ball had some sort of record he was going for...derp

I heard it. I laughed. I then turned the channel. It's just too obvious that people on ESPiN say crap to get Ohio State fans annoyed. I mean why else would Mark May be on tv?

i understand what he was saying there.

it's all about expectations.
i don't think anyone is surprised that Meyer turned OSU around.
Undefeated may be above expectations, but all in all, this is what we all figured would happen.

Barfy O'Bumblefuck wasn't expected to win 7 games this year.
so him doing so probably sewed up that award for him.

When the attrition we expected didn't happen, we didn't expect them to lost 6 games. When they lost to Ohio and Virginia, that's when the expectations went down.

Not sure that qualifies as COY candidacy. Now if he wins 7 games next year, THEN he's a viable candidate

Which is stupid. in my IMO. It's the same reason Jim Tressel never won Big Ten coach of the year. Because Ohio State is supposed to be good, that means the coach hasn't done the best job when they are better than everyone else?

We KNOW Urban Meyer is a good coach, so we can't give him coach of the year award, even though he has exceeded everyone's expectations. Beanbag O'Billabong was unknown coming into the season, so when he exceeds expectations, that deserves an award?

I don't have a problem with Bobolink O'Beefjerky winning the award, it's just flawed reasoning, in my IMO.

Completely agreed. When Ron Zook, Ron Turner and John L. Smith each individually have as many Coach of the Year awards than Jim Tressel, John Cooper and Earle Bruce COMBINED...there's something wrong with your process.

Perhaps Mr. Delaney has more pressing internal issues to address than expanding the geographical map.
If COTY awards are given out as "feel good" awards - that's a problem for any conference.

I don't mean it as "feel good".
I mean coaching THAT team to 7 wins is an impressive coaching job.

nobody thought that roster was good enough to win that many games.

OSU roster on the other hand IS good enough to win at least 10 games.
so winning 11 or 12 is probably better than expected, it is within range of what Urban was SUPPOSED to do.

I don't hand out awards for doing your job at or around the level you should be at.

I hope Mr. Delaney doesn't even think about the COTY awards. And I didn't say they should be "feel good" awards but since the topic has been brought up, I'm sharing my two cents that "Coach Who's Team Most Exceeded Expectations" =/= "Best Coaching Job". Especially in cases where the coaches own incompetence helped set low expectations.

Except that Meyer took over a 6-7 team and has them at 11-0 with minimal contributions from true freshman. These are the same players as last year, but have improved that much. He didn't walk into a situation with a team coming off of a 10-win season.
