Emerald Bowl - Miami 17, Cal 24 (Final)

Marve out for Emerald Bowl

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Miami quarterback Robert Marve's season began with a one-game suspension, and it'll end with another.
Marve will not play in the Emerald Bowl next week because of a violation of team academic rules, which he told The Associated Press was regarding "a miscommunication about absentees for a class."
Marve said he was late for a class on the final day of the semester, but that tardy arrival counted as an absence that ultimately made him ineligible.
"I was just talking to another teacher and got late for my nexlass," Marve told The AP late Thursday night. "Obviously, I am very disappointed that I can't play or go to San Francisco over a situation like this. It's already been kind of a rough season and it's a disappointing ending."
Miami coach Randy Shannon said he could not reveal any specific details about Marve's situation, other than it would be a one-game issue and not something to carry into 2009. Jacory Harris, who played in all 12 games and started the opener against Charleston Southern, will start when Miami (7-5) plays California (8-4) in San Francisco on Dec. 27.
"Violation of team rules," Shannon said. "That's all it was."

Ivory is fifth Hurricane suspended from Emerald Bowl

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami punt snapper Chris Ivory will not play in Saturday's Emerald Bowl because he violated an unspecified team rule.
He is the fifth Hurricanes player to be suspended for the final game of the season.
Ivory did not accompany the Hurricanes to San Francisco, where Miami (7-5) will face California (8-4) on Saturday.
He also was suspended for the season-opener against Charleston Southern for another rules violation, but won the Albert Bentley Award as the team's most valuable walk-on player.
Jake Byrne, who handles snaps on field goals, will take over Ivory's punt-team duties. Byrne also will be the backup quarterback behind Jacory Harris, who will start after Robert Marve was suspended for missing classes.
Tight ends Richard Gordon and Tervaris Johnson, along with linebacker Jordan Futch, also were suspended last week for the bowl game because of team rules violations.

Longshore to start for Cal

Fifth-year senior quarterback Nate Longshore will start for California in the Emerald Bowl against Miami, coach Jeff Tedford announced. Tedford said Longshore, who was the Golden Bears' starter for two years before losing the job to Kevin Riley at the stast of this season, has performed well in practice, Tedford said. Riley started the first four games of the season and five of the last six. "He's just had a couple of really good weeks of practice," Tedford said of Longshore. "He's really sharp throwing the ball and has a really good command of what we're doing. He's really done a nice job."

If UM loses bowl game, mayor can't pay off bet -- because it's illegal
BY JOSE PAGLIERY

Miami's mayor and San Francisco's mayor have a wager on Saturday's 7th Annual Emerald Bowl between the Hurricanes and the California Golden Bears.

And Miami had better win, because Mayor Manny Diaz has promised to
send oranges if they lose.

That would be illegal.

Florida oranges can't be shipped to California because of fears that citrus canker could spread to the California crop.

Helena Poleo, a spokeswoman for Diaz, said the mayor won't break the law.

''We're definitely not going to do anything that will get anyone fined,'' she said. ``And it's just a silly wager. If that can't get done, we can find some other arrangement they'll be happy with.''

If Miami wins, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has promised to send Diaz a case of Napa Valley wine and sourdough bread.

An official at Hawaii's Department of Agriculture suggested a substitute if the Hurricanes come up short. Orange juice. Or pineapple juice.

Cont'd ...

Cal's 76-yard TD was overturned, only after Shannon challenged the play.

Then they marked it at the 2. No mention of the horsecollar tackle that was the only reason he was tackled before the TD.

How could replay not think they needed to look at it, and then mark it on the 2?

Cal scored on the second play.

Miami got a lucky 3rd down conversion on a ball that bounced off the belly of a tackle eligible laying on the ground. They hit a 40-yard pass on the next play.

14-0 Cal after the 1st Q.

While Shannon has loaded up on some young talent, so far he has not instilled enough discipline into this team. Miami is probably close to where they were in '99.

He's working on the discipline. 5 guys were kept from playing in this game.
