Ed "LL" Warinner (Run Game Coordinator FAU)

Herman was t perfect, no one is. But Clemson- we scored plenty and might have even done more with a healthy Miller. I don't think that game was a bad effort by Herma. Or the offense.
I might be wrong but if i recall fans were upset at the lack of touches for Hyde in some key short yardage situations? Seems like Carlos didn't get many carries the second half. Maybe my memory fails me.

Edit - No memory failure lol. I went back and checked. There was plenty of criticism about the play calling. You might even find some of your posts lol. It is funny to go back and read threads from a couple of years ago. I imagine this one as like most of the rest will be funny too.

There was definitely some angst after the 4th down run against Sparty in the CCG that year.

I vote to bring Herman back
At half of the NIU game my friend Bob said, "Get Herman on the phone, double his salary, and get him on a plane immediately." I just laughed.

I really liked Herman, but I don't think Warriner is Jim Bollman. There is a lack of flow and congruity in the offense that has to go from the OC down to the players. They will get it figured out. Heck, if they can score 3 or 4 times a game, the defense appears to be able to handle the rest. But I think eventually we will see this offense be what we thought it would be.

Someone in the box needs to read what the alignment of the defense is and allow the play being called to take advantage. Too many times the past couple games we were going into the teeth of the defense instead of outmanning them somewhere else. The right plays are in the book, just have to call them at the right times.

11W has an article on some of the plays being called. It often wasn't the wrong play called. FWIW.

I said that after re-watching the game, I felt like we just did not execute and our play makers didn't make plays and their best players did make some plays. You are always going to want a couple of plays back, but for the most part after really watching close where I could pause and replay many of the plays and look at what formation we were in and how they were aligned on D, I felt like the play calling wasn't all that bad, the execution was.

I liked Herman, but I also recall some games where he failed, ie VTech, Clemson, etc. He had his not so great moments as well. There are going to be games where the other coaches that are also paid pretty well because they are also good at what they do comes up with something better than our guys do.
I would not call V-Tech game last year as a Herman fail. O-line was the fail in that game and it didn't matter what Herman called in that game.

Interesting from today's presser: Meyer seems to be ruminating on his options with respect to his offensive coordinators. It seems like he's realizing that calling plays from the sideline isn't working. His choices to get through the season seem to be either moving Warinner up to the press box or giving playcalling duties to Tim Beck. Of the two, what is everybody's preference?

I'd rather have Warinner in the box. Figure if he's stripped of OC now it's essentially a demotion and he's likely to leave for somewhere that will let him be an OC.
If that's what it comes down to - put him in the booth and see what he's got.

We need to buy a lifeguard stand Warriner can sit in on the sideline.

Anybody else remember back in the day when ABC kicked Paul Maguire out of the announcer's both and made him sit on a camera lift on the sidelines to do color commentary? They could get one of those for Warinner and he could operate the boom to get closer to the linemen when he needs to.

Let Beck call 'em from the booth. Warinner's indispensable as the OL coach and needs to be with his guys. Warinner's also a proven commodity so let's see what Beck's got.

Agree with this! Warinner's value with in game offensive line scheme adjustments and individual coaching makes him a priority on the sidelines. We should have different play cards for the defensive fronts we are facing (ex: Bear front, Odd Front, 4-3, etc.). Stick with our scripted series of plays for the 1st drive or 2 then have offense be fluent to the defensive front we're facing and attack it with the plays on that particular play sheet. Beck should be upstairs with Warinner and Meyer providing input at any time on the sideline. QB coaching isn't really crucial from the sidelines as they are typically go straight to the headset with the coach while the defense is on the field. Beck can provide better QB input from the press box anyway because he can see the defensive fronts and probably has live tv feeds to explain techniques or misreads by the QB. The biggest thing i've seen is the coaching staff needs to find play calls to attack the Odd Front because the confusion of our OL and QBs when faced with this front is really making our offense sputter regardless of QB.

They have those plays. Oregon played an odd front and the Buckeyes destroyed them. According to the film study on 11W, Ohio State just isn't running those plays very much, and when they do players are making mistakes to nullify the play call.
