Early White Out (Bolden Split)

Both PSU and OSU lost about the same amount of players from last year and as pointed out, both lost their WRs. Both return their starting QBs but PSU returns the best RB in the Big Ten.

I don't think one team or the other has a decided advantage heading into this year's game in Happy Valley. Just like last year and most years when PSU and OSU get together, it'll come down to who wants it more and who makes the least mistakes. There's a reason why the all-time record is 12-12 between PSU and OSU and both programs have about the same amount of all-time wins. Whether Buckeyes or Nits will ever admit it, Ohio and OSU are very similar to PA and PSU. See you all in November!!

Don't tell bn27, but we've got quite a young rivalry brewing these days between our programs. It's sacrilege to many, but it's been a pretty stellar decade of games so far. Zach Mills' heroics, Gamble's pick 6, the infamous bounce catch, "the rail", Troy's heisman moment, & Terrelle's fumble. There's a reason gameday has been there 4 straight years, IIRC.
it'll come down to who wants it more and who makes the least mistakes.
Let's hope he doesn't catch a glimpse of your attire. Forget the meaning behind it, he might lose the will to keep on breathing.

I know the Buckeye hardliners will probably say "no way" to this but I have no doubt that if PSU had been in the Big Ten originally, PSU would be OSU's historic rival and not Michigan. PSU and OSU's rivalry makes sense in every way except for total amount of games played and that'll be corrected over time. From recruiting, to the high schools, to the populations, and the Big 33 game, OSU is more similar to PSU than they are to Michigan.

To respond to this nicely, put me down as a hardliner. There's a lot of history involved, including TSUN's dominance in the pre-WWI days, which made them OSU's rival. And way back then, if tOSU was going to have a rival from the state to the East, it probably would have been Pitt, who was dominant up until WWII.

And I fail to see how the total amount of games played will be "corrected over time". tOSU plays both TSUN and PSU every year, so the percentage of games will change, but the net difference will remain virtually the same indefinitely.

Yes, of course the difference of 81 more games between OSU and Michigan v OSU and PSU is never going to change but the significance of that 81 game difference will change over time.

Ex:

105(UM) v 24(PSU) games played = 63% more v UM

500(UM) v 419(PSU) games played = 9% more v UM

Get it now?

Since the post of mine that you quoted included a statement by me that 'the percentage of games will change', I think I understood the concept before your post.

But thanks for the condescending explanation, despite its errors.

Because 105 is 337.5% more than 24, and 500 is 19.33% more than 419. To calculate the percentage difference between two positive numbers, one takes the difference between the numbers and divides it by the smaller number.

Get it now?

I've been trying to convince many here that it's a rivalry (though clearly in addition to, not instead or ahead of UM). Statements like this aren't going to help soften their stance

That and the whole cheering at games thing.

I wasn't being condescending at all. I may have failed in my math but the point remains the same. You feel strongly now about the UM v OSU rivalry because of the fact that OSU has played UM 4xs more than they've played PSU. As the years go by that number will continue to dwindle until the 81 game difference isn't a big deal anymore and IMO the more natural rivalry between OSU and PSU will have a chance to become the main rivalry. This of course all depends upon OSU and PSU remaining at the top of the Big Ten over the long haul.

Haha, so true! Iowa, Wiscy, OSU, and PSU all present scarier atmospheres than Michigan easily IMO.

It's virtually impossible for PSU to catch UM.

UM #1 all-time wins.
The Snow Bowl.
1969, one of the greatest teams ever, one of the greatest upsets ever, and one of the best backstories ever.
The Ten Year War.
The Heisman Pose.
So many epic upsets by UM over NC bound teams.
Biakabatuka.
Troy Smith.
The Game 2006.

PSU has been a tougher game at times for OSU, and may continue to be occasionally in the future. But it doesn't have a prayer of matching that kind of history.

dammit how come I always seem to catch the SEC losers only to miss the Pennsyl[censored]hole State [strike]penitentiary[/strike] University losers?

Try less time practicing self-gratification? JK

Oh yeah, Bolden did indeed commit to PSU today so now our class looks like this:

2 5*s
7 4*s
2 3*s
1 unrated (Jordan Norwood's brother who didn't play last year because of moving from PA to TX)

We're expected to get Dakota Royer (4*), Kevin Haplea (4*), Khairi Fortt (4*), and Alex Kenney (4*) in the near future as well. We're also thought to be the favorite for Sharrif Floyd (5*) who will be making his 4th Summer visit to State College this weekend. That should guarantee us the best class in the Big Ten this year and we still could add Lattimore, the nation's best RB out of SC.

a couple close games in a row doesn't make a rivalry. there wouldn't even be any rivalry talk if we didn't shit the bed in 2005. play like shit and barely lose to a team playing out of their ass and all of a sudden we have a rivalry on our hands.

I blame the stupid fascination of {color} outs on Ohio State, as well as the ridiculous SEC IS TEH GREATEST!!!! shit that's on every media outlet (thanks to 2006). we dropped the ball twice since Tressel's been hired, and we'll never hear the end of it.

So what is your position with the team?
