They just had the announcement of the 4 potentially departing Buckeyes on the local news (Channel 9). It certainly seems a dead certainty that Ginn will be told he is round numero uno material. We know what Tressel's mantra will be, if you are going in the first round as a junior, then go young man.

Still, it will be sad to see Teddy depart, he has brought more in the way of magic moments in one season than many players manage over a career at Ohio State. Here is hoping that the two T's cap their respective Buckeye careers in style with a win in Glendale.

From the way that Gonzo sounded in that piece:
"What I want to do is come back, that's for sure," Gonzalez said. "That's easy because it's fun here. The vast majority of the people I know in the NFL are miserable.
I feel he is a candidate to stay.

Pittman has ben mentioned earlier, but Barton will also be missed should he go, I wonder how close he is to fully graduating (he was a redshirt Junior, so has 4 classroom years).

Well this story shot my day in the behind. I can't blame them but I sure will miss them all. The Nfl will have a lucky day. Man, just thinking of the talent involved is mind boggling.

Early Departures for NFL (merged)

Obviously OSU players are on the forefront of our minds, but, let's start a thread about all NCAA players making the leap. Here is an article about Gonzo, Barton, Ginn and Pitt from foxsports.

Great comment from Gonzo: "What I want to do is come back, that's for sure," Gonzalez said. "That's easy because it's fun here. The vast majority of the people I know in the NFL are miserable."

Read somewhere that Jake Long is NOT going pro. That was a bit of a surprise.

Yea he said he wants to come back next year because he has some "unfinished business".

My guess it is that he means it will take him another year to finish cleaning out all the toilets in the big "shit" house.

Hmm, tough to gauge tone (or humor) by raw text.

When reading that quote, I read it both ways. I'm optimistic, but I also wonder if he'd like to stay at OSU an extra year but realizes it would be smart (from a $$$ standpoint) to head out now.

Gonzo is a bright kid, and he's going to listen to solid guidance. What I read that to mean is that he goes only if it's a no-brainer, ie. he would not be drafted higher next year, and could even go lower, or if he's going to go high enough that another year of college would be a large financial risk. He's not eager for it.

By contrast, Pittman's quote is what you expect from a player who's gone if it makes even remote sense. "I have a family to take care of" is the oldest line from the player leaving early, and potentially willing to gamble on a low pick.

Ginn is gone, because as a potential top ten pick, it's absurd to stay. No one will advise him to do so.

Barton is the wild card there. My bet is that for him it's going to depend on the depth of this year's OL class versus next year's. Maybe someone who has really studied this year's draft versus 2008 has a better guess on where he might go relatively.

Jr's Looking to Leap Into NFL

Via the AP, Posted on ESPN.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four of Ohio State's top offensive players are considering leaving school early to enter the NFL draft.
Junior wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez, tailback Antonio Pittman and lineman Kirk Barton filed paperwork with the NFL on Friday.
"We're just awaiting some information so that we can make good decisions," said coach Jim Tressel, whose No. 1 Buckeyes play No. 2 Florida for the national title Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.
An NFL advisory committee estimates where, or if, a player might be taken in the draft. A player can then elect to remain in college or make himself available for the draft.
Pittman said several weeks ago he wanted to come back for his senior year and win the Heisman Trophy -- just as teammate Troy Smith did this year.
"I want to come back, but like anyone else I have a family to take care of," said Pittman, who rushed for 1,171 yards and 13 touchdowns after gaining 1,331 yards and scoring seven times a year ago. "When the paperwork comes back in, I'll sit down with my parents and coach Tress and then we'll make a decision."
Ginn led top-ranked Ohio State (12-0) with 59 receptions for 781 yards and nine touchdowns. With breakneck speed, he is also one of the nation's top return men.
Gonzalez is second on the team in receiving with 49 catches for 723 yards and eight scores. He is known as a dependable receiver with good hands and speed.
He filled out the papers just to keep his options open.
"What I want to do is come back, that's for sure," Gonzalez said. "That's easy because it's fun here. The vast majority of the people I know in the NFL are miserable."
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Barton started every game at right tackle as the Buckeyes averaged 36.3 points and 410 yards per game.
Three Buckeyes left early a year ago for the NFL, with two taken in the first round (defensive back Donte Whitner and wide receiver Santonio Holmes) and another in the third (defensive back Ashton Youboty).
Twenty-two Ohio State players have left school early to be a part of the draft since 1992. The list includes some of the most productive Buckeyes in the NFL: Dan Wilkinson, Terry Glenn, Shawn Springs, Orlando Pace, Nate Clements and Chris Gamble.
The Buckeyes are chasing their second national championship in the past five years. Ginn said his focus right now is not on the NFL, but the game.
"The papers and the NFL and all that can wait," he said. "It's going to be a decision that I'll have to ask my parents about."
Tressel called Gonzalez to suggest that he file the paperwork. Gonzalez said had no desire to leave but would reserve judgment until after he had gotten an idea of what NFL teams thought about him.
"I want to come back. Now what's the right thing to do? I don't have the answer to that. Nobody does right now," he said.
Pittman is not looking forward to making the decision when the time comes.
"I don't think it's an easy decision at all," he said. "For the last three years, this is all I've known. These guys come in here are like family. To walk away from your family is a hard thing." Asked if players leaving early came with having a high-profile program, Tressel said, "It's just part of the deal."

I realize this comes as no shocker to anyone in the Buckeye fan pool, but there are some things in to consider.

First, I like what AP is saying. He WANTS to come back, but is weighing his options as he should. I doubt he leaps unless he is a definate first round pick.

Second, I like the JT encouraged Gonzo to submit his papers. Gonzo should have an idea where he is and if he comes back he knows what will improve his status for next year. And JT knows his responsibility to these kids is to put them into position, when the time is right, to succeed at their next stage in life. If the time is right for Gonzo, then so be it.
