Early bet: Who will win the NBA MVP?

Look what Kobe has to work with on his team.

Loads more. Bynum (before the injury) was becoming one of the better Centers in the league, and Odom (who I woulda took over Gooden in a heartbeat) to start along with a vastly superior bench. Without Kobe, the Lakers wouldn't be that good, probably win 30-35 games. Without LeBron, the Cavs may be the worst team in the league and would probably struggle to get to 25 wins. They're 0-6 without him in the lineup this year. On top of that, his stats trump Kobe's nearly across the board...

PPG- 30.2/ 28.1 (LBJ)
RPG- 8.1/ 6.1 (LBJ)
APG- 7.5/ 5.2 (LBJ)
FG%- 48.3/ 46.1 (LBJ)
FT%- 70.9/ 84.8 (Kobe)
SPG- 2.1/ 1.9 (LBJ)
BPG- 1.1/ 0.5 (LBJ)

In the past, I'd say Kobe was the best player in the NBA, this year, LeBron's the man.

NBA MVP

I know there are still 6 weeks left but I feel that we have a lot of data to make an educated opinion here...

The top 4 IMO are in order...

1. LBJ
2. Kobe
3. Chris Paul
4. KG

I really believe that it is between the top 2 and maybe it is me being a homer, and seeing LBJ night in and night out and not really seeing Kobe, even tho I did see his 52 point game to beat Dallas yesterday...

But the thing is LBJ has Kobe in every stat category...

LBJ - 30.3pts
Kobe - 28.2pts

LBJ - 8.1rbs
Kobe - 6.1rbs

LBJ - 7.5 assts
Kobe - 5.4 assts

LBJ - 2 stls
Kobe - 2 stls

LBJ - 1blks
Kobe - .6blks

LBJ has most fourth quarter pts. Kobe is second...

Also LBJ has 59.0 pts/48 minutes in situations where we are +/- 5 points with 5 or less minutes in regulation or OT...

Kobe is at 50.1pts/48 minutes in the same situation...

LBJ takes the shot attempt 37% of the time and Kobe takes it 36% of the time...

LBJ also has an assist % of 23 and Kobe 17...So while he is taking a lot of the shots he is also finding teammates down the stretch as well...

Also 10 rbs to 7 rbs in that time...

Turnovers are 3 to 5 in favor of LB having 3 in that time...

Blocks 2 to 1 in favor of LBJ...

Steals 3.4 to .6 in favor of LBJ...

And for as bad as LBJ is at free throws at times he is at 79 and Kobe is at 75% in that time...

So basically LBJ is just killing Kobe in every stat...The one place where Kobe has LBJ is the Lakers having the better record of the two having a 7 game lead on the Cavs, but if you take the 6 games in a row that LBJ missed in a row we would be right there with them I believe...

Also Kobe has more to work with now with Odom and and Gasol...

In the last 25% of their games the Lakers SOS has been .427...The Cavs has been .515...

Also lets not count out all the injuries the Cavs have had...Yeah the Lakers lost Bynum, but they still have other players...The Cavs have been without Boobie, Z, Sasha, Wild Thing, etc. for most of the season at least having one out...

The Cavs will be best later in the season as all guys will be healthy and LBJ will have his best supporting cast he has ever had...

Also lets keep in mind what LBJ did head to head against Kobe and shut him down in the fourth quarter and the Cavs are 2-0 against them..

The media seems to be all over Kobe's jock and basically say there is no way for anyone else to win it and it is for sure Kobe's but stats don't lie...

Should be LeBron...he's a man possessed this year. I made the argument in the vBet thread...He's superior statistically nearly across the board to Kobe, the Cavs are 0-6 without him and Kobe has a superior supporting cast.

My gut tells me Kobe will win it as of right now because his team is doing much better. If they can get the #1 seed in the West the MVP is Bryant's easily... even though I my vote would go to LeBron.

But the Lakers have 4 guys in double figures in the starting lineup...And one averaging 20 in gasol...5 with Bynum...

The Cavs have LBJ, Z, Wally, Boobie...

I am not saying that Kobe is not deserving, but just looking at what LBJ is doing it is hard to say that he is not very deserving as well...Especially when you look at the stats, and the value that LBJ has in the clutch...

BTW LBJ just won another player of the month award...that makes 2 months in a row...

I think Kobe will take it this year. When it comes down to the stats, LeBron has him but they are incredibly close. And Kobe is the best active player to have never won an MVP, and one of the best ever to have not won it. I think that will push him over the top.

Kobe is going to win b/c everyone is on his jock this year.

I didn't think it'd be possible for the media to overlook LeBron, but they are doing it. Only 3 people have ever averaged 30, 7, and 7. LeBron is doing it this year.

The other thing about LeBron, is he is WAYYY more versatile than Kobe. While I concede Kobe is probably the better pure scorer, LeBron is a better offensive player. LeBron could be a much better scorer if that is what his M.O. was. But it isn't, he likes to get his teammates open looks. His 4th quarter statistical comparison to Kobe is proof that when it's time to take a game over, he does it.

I hope the Lakers go flat to end the regular season, or LeBron and his new running mates go on a tear. LeBron is the best player in the league, and this years MVP. Substitue Kobe for LeBron on the Cavs, and they are a .500 or worse squad.
