Early bet: Who will win the NBA MVP?

I'm a homer, but I think Lebron has been the MVP of the league. He has had very little help and pretty much carries the Cavs on a nightly basis. They haven't won when he doesn't play. The Celtics still played well when KG was hurt and have two other really good players. I haven't seen Paul enough to judge him, but the Hornets have tailed off recently. This may be Kobe's best season, but Lebron has had better numbers and has been better in their matchups. I think the media is going to do what they can to get Kobe the MVP this year even if he isn't really the MVP.

LeBron is the most impressive athlete I have ever seen. But Kobe is the better basketball talent.

Shooter...Kobe
IQ...Kobe
Will...Kobe

Scorer...Wash

Facilitator...LBJ
Rebounder...LBJ
Athlete...LBJ

By the time LBJ is Kobe's age he will be a better basketball talent, and LBJ is developing more and more of the will to win the desire to take the ball down the stretch, as he has shown with in the Cavs 19 4th quarter comebacks...

Basketball IQ is a wash at best, maybe even leaning towards Lebron. He's incredibly aware of his surroundings and more importantly the surroundings of his opponents and teammates.

I think Lebron should be the MVP. He's been better than Kobe in pretty much every facet of the game except defense, and even there he's making up ground.

Don't forget what happened the last time the Lakers and Cavs met up, when Lebron guarded Kobe down the stretch Kobe went cold.

I agree on the first point to some extent...LBJ is getting better and his IQ is growing, and at age 29 he will be where Kobe is if not better...But Kobe understands the game so well, understands when he needs to look for his shots and take the game over...

First off, this is kind of a stupid argument on my part because so much of being a good basketball player is athleticism. That said, and I am not going to argue that Kobe is not an incredible athlete because he certainly is, if Lebron had Kobe's basketball skill set he would be the best player the NBA has ever seen.

Lebron being a better rebounder is to be expected because he has 2 inches and 20 pounds on Kobe, not to mention that as a forward he plays closer to the hoop on both offense and defense. As a facilitator, I would agree with you, but also point out that a big part of that is Lebron's athletic ability to get to the rim against anyone in the league, and thus the need for other defenders to peel off of him to help, allowing easy dump-offs to Wallace and Z.

I also agree that the thing that Kobe has that Lebron is still developing is the killer instinct. It is certainly much better than it was last season, ever since the playoff game vs. Detroit really, and his numbers in the fourth quarter this year don't lie. But watch a Lakers game, and there are possessions that you just absolutely know that Kobe is going to take and make a shot because he understands that his team needs a bucket right then. I really just don't get that vibe from Lebron yet.

At age 29, Lebron will certainly be better than Kobe was. But I don't think he is right now.

Its really funny that everyone here is so quick to dismiss Paul too.

Most people here probably haven't seen Paul as much as Lebron and Kobe myself included. Of course to truly be a great player you have to be known by your first name i.e. Magic, Larry, Michael, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, etc. :p

1a. Chris Paul
1b. Big Fundamental
3. Lebron
4. Kobe
5. Dwight Howard

Every time I see Chris Paul play, he is the best player on the court. He is leading a much less talented team (than Kobe's) to the top of the west. He outplayed both Nash and Deron Williams in their recent matchups, and it's really unbelievable how good he is already. There is no doubt that Kobe is a great player having another great season, but I just can't shake the feeling that the award has already been bestowed upon him as some sort of lifetime achievement award.

If the Spurs win it all again, I retroactively change my vote to Duncan.

Hadn't seen you two talk about this when I was posting.

Chris Paul has his own Jordan line of shoes. I think that means he is kind of a big deal now.

Nothing says "MVP" like a commercial for the PBA. :p

Paul is the MVP of my fantasy team... he is going to make me alot of money this year :pimp:

But the MVP for the NBA will be Kobe. The MVP award is all politics in the NBA. Shaq should have won the MVP about 5 more times than he has. But once you raise the bar that high you really have to do something outstanding to win the MVP.

Kobe did that early in his career but never got the MVP. He was able to lower that bar the last few years and now that he is winning again everyone is "rediscovering" how great Kobe is. And shock of all shocks... he has never won the MVP and the media will try to "correct there error". So with the Lakers becoming the top team in the West the stars have aligned for Kobe to win it (and thus why my Vcash is on Kobe).

Now, that is no knock on LeBron. He SHOULD win the MVP. Heck, he SHOULD have won the MVP the last 2 years. But the problem for LeBron is he is playing in a conference that is considered the JV league. He is on a team that is a 4-5 seed. He is getting the "Heisman" bias, ie he is so young, he will get his MVPs eventually. And the media is starting to take him for granted. So the bar has been raised so freaking high the only way he can sniff an MVP trophy is to lead the Cavs to the best record in the NBA or average a triple double for the season (or get real dang close like 30/9/9).

Is it right? No But the NBA doesn't really do alot of things right anyway.

They continue to have all this shit on ESPN about the MVP LBJ vs Kobe, and everyone continues to mention how Kobe has been putting back to back season together and hasn't won one yet...Well who gives a shit it is for the 07-08 season...NOt a career and if they really wanted to look at it you could go back two years ago and look at what LBJ did, and go back last year and look at how he took his team to the finals...

No one is mentioning stats because they don't have an argument there...LBJ leads Kobe in all major stat categories...

Everyone continues to mention Kobe's defense, but did they not see what LBJ did to Kobe in the head to head match ups...He forced him to take bad shots and brought the Cavs back in those games...

I hate the reasonings behind LBJ having better stats because he is bigger...Well he is a all around player, he is one of the only 3 players in the history of the game to average 30,8,7...So to be this means that LBJ can help the team in more ways than just scoring...

Not knocking Kobe because he is very good his 50 point performance against Dallas was very impressive, and him leading the Lakers to the best record in the West is impressive...I don't think it is just LBJ and the field, but I don't think it is Kobe ahead of LBJ...

I find this argument funny actually, personally, I think Kobe will get it, simply for the reason that there's been years he deserved it but the hype was all Shaq. At this point in his career, he's playing some of his best basketball, he's merciless on the court, he's kept his mouth shut and they have won. Everyone uses the argument that the talent around Kobe has always been great, but he pretty much willed the Lakers into the playoffs for the past 2 seasons, he's doing a lot more to make his team better this year, and well, simply put, he's older than LeBron.

Will both eventually get one? Probably. And if the options were go to the finals or have Kobe MVP, I would take the chance for another Lakers championship. But I realize I am the minority, so flame away.
