True, but outside of myself and a handful of others back on Bustnuts (pre-BP days), everyone hated the hire when it happened. Shit about "yeah, he can coach and recruit at that level, but this is Ohio State." Tressel sure proved eveyone wrong.

And Duke wasn't in a state of turmoil with All-Americans starters suspended for half the season or bailing early for the NFL, along with the constant negative media (i.e., E$PiN) bombardment. Fickell's first season as head coach isn't even over yet.

If OSU doesn't hire Meyer after the season, I want them to retain Fickell and give him full 100% freedom to hire his own staff from top to bottom.

A lot of folks are comparing LF to the likes of Will Muschamp and asserting that LF has similar coaching experience.

What is this based on?

What we know: (1) JT was a hands-on coach who controlled a lot of elements of the program; (2) JT had assistant head coaches during his tenure who presumably assisted in managing the program; (3) Bollman and Heacock were senior to LF in both time on JT's staff and position; (4) LF's highest previous position was as co-defensive coordinator with Heacock who has been a coach here since 1996.

Do we even know if LF has ever had play-calling responsibility before this season? Muschamp was clearly Brown's #2 for several seasons. I am unsure whether LF could have ever been considered higher than #5 for a full season under JT (with JT, assistant head coach, Heacock and Bollman a head of him).

Not that it's a big deal but something Fickell said during a press conference really bothered me. He was asked for an opinion on the Penn State situation, he responded by saying something to the effect he didn't know anything about it and hadn't read anything at all about it. I'm guessing this was at least 3 or 4 days after the story had be broken, I just found it really hard to believe.

I believe he said it wasn't his place to judge. The feeling I got through the words was that it just wasn't something he wanted to talk about. I can't blame him.

Terriffic ? wow, gotta disagree.

Luke has done a fair job but certainly not great in my opinion. The defense has regressed and the offense has as well.......that's a dangerous combo.

I think that in time Luke will be able to gain a lot from the experience and take a better perspective. Whether or not he's HC material is still highly questionable. Some guys are just not cut out to do it. No shame in that.

That's pretty much been his standard response to most questions not about Ohio State football.

Q. The New York Times is reporting that Joe Paterno is going to be out imminently as the head coach, maybe not in a week, but sooner or later. Ohio State as their primary Big Ten rival, your reaction, not the circumstances that led to it, but what it would mean for him to walk away? COACH FICKELL: I don't know. I'm not going to comment a lot on the Penn State stuff. Obviously, he has an unbelievable career. I haven't read about it. It's probably speculation. It would be nothing more than a speculation if I said anything.

Great program, great man, and I'll just leave it at that.

QF Truthiness. The comments made earlier that essentially suggested that he was not running or had a hand in the offense suggested big problems to me. Didn't I read somewhere that Vrabs tossed the playbook across the room earlier this season calling it a bunch of shit? That just doesn't make sense... If you know that Dave, Dave, Play Action isn't going to work... The fucking fix it. Jeez... Vrabs can see it, we all can see it... Why not fix it?

Just wake me up when we have a coach who gets to put together his own staff... And has his hands in what's going on with both the O and D.

Depending on the rumor to which one subscribes, either the jury is still out on Luke Fickell being retained as Ohio State?s head coach after his interim reign in place of the deposed Jim Tressel or this will be Fickell?s last home game as head coach as the school presses on to find a successor.

That?s the burden Fickell, 38, and his coaching staff have been bearing for a while in what has amounted to a season-long audition to prove their worth. The questions became acute last weekend following the loss at underdog Purdue, which dropped the Buckeyes to 6-4 overall, 3-3 in the Big Ten and needing calamity to strike (a loss by Wisconsin at Illinois today) to stay in the Leaders Division race.

Thus Fickell goes into today?s game against Penn State, led by its interim coach Tom Bradley, with a last chance to put hit best foot forward for the home crowd and those judging his prowess.

?It's not easy, but the world isn't fair,? Fickell said. ?Some people try to say, ?Hey, are you going to ask the question is it fair for the situation (he?s been thrust into)?? You know, life isn't fair. ? Is it fair that we've got a coach and a great friend that's going through and battling cancer right now, (former OSU quarterbacks coach Joe) Daniels? Is it fair that he has to go through what he has to go through?

?So there are a lot of different situations. We understand that it's a part of life, so we're not going to sit here and make excuses and worry about those types of things. We've just got to continue moving forward and focus on what we can control. We said at the beginning of the year, it's truly about this group of young men. It's about this group of coaches. It's about this program. All of the other things will have to take care of themselves.?

The BTN feature on Luke in their 'Step Into My Office' series will be shown again tonight.

After the tOSU basketball game, which is scheduled to finish at 11 pm ET, they will first show the Big Ten Icons piece on Woody Hayes, followed immediately by Step Into my Office.

Those using a DVR should record the BTN Football report afterwards as well, in the event that the hoops game delays both of the other shows.
