Maybe you guys should just chill and save this new coach talk until after the season, give the guy a break.

We're not talking about a new coach, we're talking about whether or not the current one should be here next season.

The guy already got a break - about the biggest one he could ask for. He got a chance to audition for the head coaching job at his alma mater, which also happens to be one of the top jobs out there. We're simply talking about how that audition is going.

I don't think the recent discussion here has been unfair or mean-spirited toward him. If anything, most people seem to be wishing things were working out differently and searching for reasons to give him more chances.

I must have misundertsood you and others when you said it "is time for a change". And what I was talking about was giving him a break by not calling for him to go until after the end of the season. Not a break by giving him more time as the coach.

Question: If Purdue doesn't block the extra point, do any of the last 4 pages of comments get made?

Just asking.

Probably not today, but probably over the course of the next few days. In my (and many others') opinion, a loss during this critical stretch would pretty much be a nail in the coffin. tOSU is just not where you grow as a coach, at least in the way Luke still has to grow.

I don't think the if/then game helps the argument for Fickell very much. This team is 4 or 5 plays away from being 3-7 rather than 6-4.
Precisely. The groundswell of support was built upon a Braxton Miller backyard football heave. Too many times this year they've looked horribly flat. Ask yourself if you think Fickell has gotten everything he can from this team. I fully agree he was dealt a rough hand, but there has been some inexcusable play out there this year. A two point win over a mediocre Purdue team today wouldn't change that fact. Luke needed a job where he could refine his coaching skills. The pressure cooker that is Ohio State football is not that job.

I think it's time for a change. I'm not going to equivocate it by saying that I'd like to see him stay on under a new coach or see the defensive staff remain intact. The last ten years were great, but it's time for a new start.

Agreed. Ever since Tress resigned, that has been my thought. I feel like Fickell is a lame duck HC. Let's all quit beating around the bush and accept the fact that he's not the long-term solution at Ohio State. I'll throw the customary "I like him a lot and he's a true Buckeye" line, but in all reality, he's not ready. He may never be ready. I want a HC who is ready. I also want an OC that has a mind that can take this offense out of the Reagan era. This season has been mediocre, might as well blow it up and build it back again. I'd venture that a majority agree with me at this point.

Good God, yes. If nothing else, can we PLEASE get a staff that can utilize the talent that we have and that we recruit. Even if Urban doesn't come and we get a lesser known coach, at least bring in an OC that can make a difference.

Like I said in the coach thread, I'm looking for a coach with elite knowledge on the offensive side of the ball. Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer, Gundy, etc. Urban is the ideal choice, but if he declines, I would like the administration to hire a known, proven head coach that can recruit like mad, and take Ohio State to the next stratosphere in terms of offensive play-calling and execution. That said coach can hire his own staff to coach the defense, if Heacock is gone. I'm not really worried about the D, they are young and inexperienced and the silver bullets usually never fail us. But the offensive philosophy has to change. The players that Ohio State recruits are fine athletes and need to be used to their greatest strengths and potential. Bollman hasn't done that this year, as I'm sure most would agree.

Not just this year. Ohio State has had some very good offenses in the past decade. 2006, 2009, 2010 being the main examples. But those teams all had elite talent all over the field. Even so, I'd classify those offenses as more "efficient" than "explosive". If Urban or Petrino coached those teams, or somebody like Malzahn was calling plays, you can bet your ass they'd have been laying some serious beatings on opponents...I'm talking 60-70 points. Part of it was JTs gentlemanly nature, a lot of it was Bollman's (often) vanilla game plans/playcalling. There were some single game exceptions, but for the most part, those offenses never reached their full potential, my IMO.

Chip Kelly isn't coming here either.

First of all, Nike/Phil Knight would never allow it.

Secondly, I would hope Ohio State doesn't have the gall to pull a stunt like USC did, replacing a coach who left amid violations with another who was under investigation himself at another school.

True. But I wasn't suggesting any of those guys to be the coach at Ohio State, except for Urban. I was just suggesting guys of that nature, high profile, Offensive geniuses, etc. Kelly def. aint coming here, just saying that I'd like someone like that on our sidelines in the future.
