Duke Blue Devils (that rat faced scumbag)

Hey look - as predicted, they ran into a team that was able to consistently score inside and their 3s weren't falling when they shot them (they actually didn't get crazy with the 3s, but they ended up at 5 for 14 or something)....

...and as I predicted - people were genuflecting at the altar of Dook when Kyrie Irving came back, and now Seth Davis is blaming his return and a disruption of chemistry for their loss.

FWIW, I do think it was a factor. Sure, they didn't make their threes. Sure, the refs didn't give them any gifts. What stood out the most to me however was their poor team defense in the second half. There was no leadership, no energy and no communication. I do think Irving's return was a disruptive factor. That team went out and won the ACC tournament and earned a #1 seed without Irving, and then they get to the most important stretch of the year and they suddenly start looking to a guy who hasn't been there as their best player.

Nolan Smith: 3-14 FG, 0-3 3PT, 2-4 FT, 2 AST, 6 TO.

That's all you need to know about the chemistry in giving Irving 31 minutes tonight.

Saw this coming when they let a mediocre scUM team come roaring back in the 2nd half last weekend. They have severe defensive lapses and when they don't have their ridiculous fouls handed to them, they don't know what to do. They looked absolutely disoriented those last ten minutes.

Duke on the Road

I think when Duke gets away from their arena and their screaming fans, the playing field is more level, The refs are more fair on their calls, and the opposition is not as much intimated! Like anybody, probably not as much "home cookin"! I saw the VT and St Johns game this year where thye lost and this seemed to be true and the case!

I don't know about that--weren't they in the bonus with 10 minutes or so to go and the double bonus with 8 minutes or so to go? There was a time with about 8-10 minutes left where they weren't totally out of it yet (they were down about 10 or so) and the only reason they stayed in the game was that they made it to the free throw line several trips in a row.

Two other things:

1. Nolan Smith apparently crying on the sidelines at the end of and after the game. I can't feel very sorry for a guy who, IMO, has time and time again acted like a total self-righteous punk on the floor.

2. I remember after the Duke-Butler NC game last year being incredulous that the announcers were saying that Duke would be the favorite again this year because Smith and Singler were returning. I thought at that time that the announcers were totally underestimating the value of Scheyer and Zoubek to last year's team.

Totally agree. Dook is a total fraud this year and ended up with a good record against a a terrible non-conference schedule and a down year for the ACC. Get them away from home and this is what happens. In addition, Arizona has been totally overlooked by the Bristol Connecticut centric sports media because after all, Arizona is in the west, and if you aren't on the east coast, you might as well not even exist. Arizona is a dangerous tourney team.

Normally, that wouldn't be a major news story. After all, there's nothing unusual about a Rivals150 recruit who has scholarship offers from the likes of UConn, Kentucky, Florida and other top programs adding an offer from Duke. There's just one catch: Krzyzewski gave Poythress his offer while the rising senior was still competing at an AAU event, and NCAA regulations specifically prohibit contact between coaches and players during such events.
As pointed out by KentuckySportsRadio.com,

How long will it take Dick Vitale to rush to Coach K's defense?

Always good to see the Kentucky media helping out. :wink2:
