Duane Long (Blog Discussion)

"The good thing is it allows the coaches to concentrate on a few less kids and give them more specialized treatment. If they can pull it off, it's a great strategy. I'll shut up if it works."
boy, this sounds like a bitter man, whatever happened between him and the staff must have been negative. He is very critical of the staff and their efforts. I am not at all worried about this class. I am very confident we will get 2-3 of the remaining targets and the class will finish in or near the top 5. What more does Conley want?

Yes, he allowed to have an opinion, but I would hold off on the critical comments until after NLOI day. Bottom line it sounds like sour grapes to me.

As far as Duane Long, I respect his opinion, but that is all it is. He is not aware of what there plans are for next year and if they are "banking" some of those scholies.

How can anyone say Conley is bitter? From an article in today's Dispatch.

Bill Conley, an assistant coach under both Tressel and Cooper, said both coaches stressed academics equally.

‘‘The advantage academically Jim Tressel has had is they have given him more help," Conley said.

Now, seven counselors keep OSU athletes on track to graduate and maintain their eligibility, compared with five two years ago.

Last summer, two part-time ‘‘academic enforcers" were added for the football team — staff who check to make sure players are in class or assigned study sessions.

He has made several public statements in the recent past critical of Tressel's recruiting methods.

That's it. I need to get a special sarcasm font for those people from Youngstown.

Conley has seemed to be nothing but bitter since he left the program. I am sure it is more than one reason and we will never know the whole story. I wish he would just go away. He is no longer a part of the program and has a new business. He needs to make those his priorities and spend a little less time dwelling on the past.

That's complete BS. Look how many of Conley/Cooper's recruits never even qualified compared to those in Tressel's classes.

No doubt Cleve.....

They had to hire two more counselors to help clean up the mess that Coop left behind.

The academic "enforcers" are guys that Tress brought from YSU. I read an article on them, and if I'm not mistaken, they're both volumnteer (unpaid) posisition.

Amazing. When Conley was at OSU, everyone praised how great he was.
Now, according to some he is bitter, and full of ****.
Some of this crap is mind boggling.

With the new NCAA guidelines coming out, Ohio State (Tressel) will have to be more picky on who they recruit. Long & Conley may be missing this important fact. As many has stated, Conley made a living off questionable recruits who could not make it in the university let alone in the class room. With the new NCAA guidelines, schools will be punished for not graduating their recruits. Sure makes sense to bring in recruits who can not make it and then be penalized.

Did Conley every graduate from college? Does he recognize that there are consequences to one's actions. No, he is like a dog in heat. Wants to screw the nearest dog and then later realizes that he screwed the pooch.

If Tressel does not get everyone he wants, it allows him to benefit some walkons plus gives him added scholarships for next year.

There is no doubt he was one of the best at his job when he was at OSU. The problem is now he only seems to appear when he is criticizing the current staff. He could easily not comment or take the approach of saying the new staff has a system that works for them and has done well.

Complaining that the new staff has better resources is a bit of sour grapes, especially because those new resources (two extra tutors) are probably as a direct result of the previous staff.

I don't see how those two things are mutually exclusive... he could easily be both.

Anyway... all speculation aside on how Conley got his Job done... or why he and Tressel parted ways... Conley does seem to have a bone to pick, and its not very becoming when he tries to do it.

If there was ever a year when it would make sense to accept fewer than your total allotment of scholarships, this would be that year.

When you're winning and riding a great reputation, you recruit the very best kids. You fill yourself to the gills with talented kids who want to be part of something great. When you're 8-4 and your reputation has been slandered non-stop by the nation's largest sports broadcaster, you don't attract all the best kids. Some (many?) great ones are scared away.

Better to bank the scholarships for twelve months, ride out the negative publicity and kick ass on the field.

So let's just be happy for what we got -- Alex Boone, Maurice Wells, Freddie Lenix, et al -- then play with a vengence and beat the crap out of absolutely everybody we play this Fall. Next year, we'll have an improved reputation both on and off the field. More great kids will want to sign up and we'll have more schollies to let them in.

Quality wins championships, gentlemen, not quantity. Everyone in Division 1 has the same number of players. Let's make sure ours are only the very best.
