DT Tywone Malone (Official thread)

I don't know if he will be waiting too much in the wings. He was supposed to be pretty solid at Ole Miss, and we need power in the middle.

If he is legit, between Hall and him, it could get really interesting against opposing teams, and the problems they will cause.

Especially softening up the OL when it comes to the run game. Ahem... TTUN
I think many aren't giving Williams, Hamilton, Hero and Kaden McKenzie enough credit. Particularly McKenzie I think is going to be tough to keep off the field.

These are the following DTs on OSU's roster:
Hall
Williams
Hamilton
Kanu
McKenzie

And that's without including true frosh: McDonald, Smith Jr and Moore.
I'm going to be honest here in saying that Malone was average(at best) at Ole Miss. Without including the freshman, I wouldn't even put Malone in the 2 deep right now. And that's not a knock on him, but just that OSU has a stocked DT room, and Malone is entering with less than 15tkls in 2 whole years in college. If he is legit like you mentioned, than he is a nice 2 deep piece, and gives guys like Hall, Williams(always needs a breather, and needs to get in better shape, IMO) and Hamilton a break. And he probably realistically takes McKenzie's spot. Malone was brought in for 2024, when Hall is probably gone along with McKenzie(and that's hoping there are no transfers).

I’m with you on the critical piece. I’m not trying to make an effort to be negative about this but Malone essentially produced nothing at Ole Miss. Other than being huge and touted and high school nothing has materialized.

Ole Miss has fielded relatively competitive teams recently and they’re producing a respectable amount of NFL talent so I don’t think I’m too interested in “well ole miss sucks” presentation unless something truly substantive comes out that offers a real explanation.

I mean at the very least as many have said he’s a huge body that can help keep better players fresh for later in the game assuming LJ puts the e best players on the field late in games.

Hey, I'm with you, you just spoke a little more freely than I
And to put it into perspective, Malone was ranked #16 DT in '26 and Tyliek Williams was #18. Yet Malone has 13tkls in 2yrs and Williams has 37(even while barely playing for an entire season). We should enjoy the depth piece, as I'd love to see a fresh Malone in the 4th quarter wearing down offenses. Hopefully LJsr has a better strategy for rotating DTs this season than he did last season

Can't help but root for him though as, according to the Ole Miss football website, Malone was on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in Spring 2022.

Agreed on all of this and what @pnuts34 said. Malone was only average at best at Ole Miss, but focusing on football and a new surrounding hopefully makes him the player you thought he would become as a recruit. As pnuts said, he might be more of a contributor next year with extra development in attrition, but is at least good depth this year. So I really like the pickup.

NO LONGER SPLITTING FOCUS BETWEEN FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL, LARRY JOHNSON SAYS TYWONE MALONE WILL BE “A DIFFERENT ATHLETE” AT OHIO STATE

139056_h.jpg

Larry Johnson got his first crack at Tywone Malone well over two years ago.

But due in part to the four-star defensive tackle prospect’s desire to play two sports at the college level, Ohio State lost out on Malone. The 63rd overall recruit in the 2021 class signed with Ole Miss, where he was given the opportunity to play both football and baseball.
Things didn’t necessarily go according to plan, though. At least, not if Malone expected to be a star in either sport in his first two seasons. Malone logged just 97 snaps on the gridiron in 2022, finishing the season with 10 total tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack. On the diamond, the second-year designated hitter only took 10 at-bats in six appearances for the Rebel baseball team.

"THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT HE'S JUST GOING TO PLAY FOOTBALL AND CONCENTRATE ON FOOTBALL. AND SO I THINK WE'LL SEE A DIFFERENT ATHLETE."– LARRY JOHNSON ON TYWONE MALONE

After that, Malone was ready for a fresh coat of paint. He entered the transfer portal on April 19, and seeking another depth piece to bolster his defensive tackle group, Johnson took another swing. This time, it worked out. Malone committed to Ohio State on May 9, and he won’t be splitting his focus between sports at his next stop.

“First of all, he wanted to make a change. That's the biggest thing. Do you really want to make a change, and why are you making the change,” said Johnson when publicly discussing the addition of Malone for the first time at an interview session last week. “And we had some really good conversations with him, his mom and his dad was very involved in the whole process. And then we got him on campus and I had two, three, four hours to spend with him, just kind of fun. Just what he was as a person, not about football. You can look at him and figure out where he is in football. What he can do, what he brings, does it fit our culture, and all those things are important to us.

“And at the end of the day, when we finished, I kind of liked what he said and the way he wants to do it and the new start for him. He said it himself, it was a fresh start. And now I'm getting away from baseball and really concentrating on football.”

Few things here..

1. Coach LT with a beard that is just spectacular

2. I haven’t seen a kid move this well as a DT since Michael Halls videos of him jumping rope etc.

3. Malone will be right up there I think with Hall and Tyliek.

Wtf man… at 300+ pounds to move like that? And we have multiple of kids like this at DT?

I’m with Jeremy Birmingham when I think the new DT coming in has to play as well (Kayden McDonald). I thought Malone would add depth but this kid is a different athlete at that size.

After seeing this I’m convinced this kid can be a game wrecker. This young man’s ability to move is rare rare.

Pretty impressive, though I don't know why they're wearing Sparty green. I think McDonald and Malone can play big roles with Malone spelling Hall and McDonald giving Tyleik a breather. Others may rotate in as well (Hamilton will play a lot, Kanu will probably play some, and maybe McKenzie) and I think they will, but Mcdonald and Malone should see the field a lot.

As to Malone, I think all the talent is there and he will thrive under superior coaching with LJ.

A few things as well:

- I absolutely love the tunes by Gang Starr
- I think LJ envisions Malone as a prototypical 3 tech but has 1 tech versatility
- I think LJ is working to change the perception of our DT room, I think we are morphing into an SEC caliber room meaning we could have guys on our 3rd team that could be starters for the majority of P5 teams and still get drafted
