Defensive lineman Tracy Sprinkle has been dismissed from the football program, an Ohio State spokesman, through head coach Urban Meyer, announced Monday. Sprinkle was arrested during Fourth of July weekend and faces a litany of charges, including cocaine possession.

"Tracy Sprinkle is no longer a part of the Ohio State football team," sports information director Jerry Emig said in a text. "His status will be re-evaluated after all legal issues are resolved."

Sprinkle appeared in Lorain Municipal Court Monday and pleaded not guilty to charges of drug possession, drug paraphernalia and rioting/failure to disperse. He was released on $2,000 bond. A pre-trial is scheduled for July 31.

Sprinkle was arrested Friday after a brawl at the Grown & Sexy Lounge in Lorain. Police officers responded to a “large fight” that included an estimated 50 people.

The official police report described “absolute mayhem” inside the bar, complete with chairs being thrown. The scene was so chaotic a police dog had to be used to restore order. The entire night shift of the Lorain Police Dept. responded to the scene, as well as Ohio State Highway Patrol officers.

Sprinkle, 19, and Wayne Blue, 23, were arrested.

Sprinkle was arrested and placed in the back of a police car, according to the report. When he was removed and placed in another car to be transported, two small bags of cocaine – 0.2 grams each – were found stuffed under the back seat.

Blue claimed he was struck in the face with a bottle by Sprinkle, according to the report. When police questioned Sprinkle, he denied any involvement and “remained quiet.”

I want this young man to be given every opportunity to come back from this, especially if charges are dropped or made less serious.

But if you think I'm going to let 2014 slip by without me swinging by the Grown and Sexy Club you are absolutely out of your mind.

This makes it especially frustrating, as it appears the cops were willing to allow Tracy to walk if he kept his mouth shut and disperse, but Tracy wasn't able (or willing) to do so.....

PRIDE COMES BEFORE THE FALL
It's not an original thought, but that's because it's true.

Tracy Sprinkle had a chance to walk away, but his pride (and perhaps the cocaine he allegedly had in his possession) didn't let him.

From Lisa Roberson of The Chronicle-Telegram:

Both [Wayne] Blue and Sprinkle were told to leave, but instead continued the confrontation. Blue was the first to be arrested after refusing to leave and continuing to confront Sprinkle.

The officer once again told Sprinkle to leave.

“The group that had been trying to hold Sprinkle back responded by saying, ‘We got him’ as they pushed him toward a car,” the report said.

Tracy was in the clear. He had already (and allegedly) hit his rival in the head with a liquor bottle. That rival was already en route to jail. The cops had given him the Go-Home-or-Go-To-Jail card (link NSFW). Usually, that's an easy decision.

Usually.

However, Sprinkle did not leave the area as instructed. He later was seen arguing again with someone, and at that time he was arrested, the officer wrote.

Fighting, and the egotistic pride that leads to it, are two of the most worthless things in human discourse. When they're mixed with alcohol (and/or drugs), the results are always downright calamitous.​

I was beginning to think that The Ohio State Univ had an entire roster of players who understood that bars and late nights = arrests, suspensions, and heap big trouble. But, alas, there are always a few dumbasses on the team. The only question is how many other dumbasses there are on the roster. Some guys can't handle time away from the football structure.

Hopefully Tracy will be able to work his way back into Urban's good graces. Or he can be a dumbass on the streets of Toledo.

Tracy needs some help and I hope the coaches and staff should provide him with all the support they can. He is a buckeye, committed to play for us, something just went wrong along the way. The staff owes his parents that much. That said I hope to never see him in scarlet and gray. Whether or not the coke was really his. He got in a huge fight, smashed a bottle on someone's head, had the opportunity to walk away and kept fighting. We don't need guys like that on our team.
