Ohio State football: Defensive tackle to join class of 2013
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday April 18, 2012

Defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle of Elyria High School became the ninth commitment to Ohio State?s 2013 recruiting class yesterday when he announced his decision on Twitter.

Sprinkle is rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com, but Elyria coach Kevin Fell said that?s misleading because Sprinkle was a virtual unknown until he had 80 tackles, eight sacks and 25 quarterback hurries as a junior.

?He had no recognition whatsoever until the end of the junior year,? Fell said. ?He had no rating at all. The only rating he had was after Ohio State offered. Then it was like, ?Who is this guy?? ?

Sprinkle had offers from about a dozen schools, including Michigan State and Penn State, according to Fell.

Sprinkle will join former Elyria teammate Chase Farris with the Buckeyes. Farris, also a defensive lineman, will be a freshman on the Ohio State team this fall.

?Chase is kind of an inside player,? Fell said. ?Tracy you would regard as probably a big speed rusher.?

The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Sprinkle has played defensive end primarily, but he might end up as a tackle for the Buckeyes.

?He got recruited as a pass rusher, but Ohio State projects him as an inside player,? Fell said. ?That may be their new philosophy ? taking those athletic guys and moving them inside.?

Sprinkle discusses Ohio State commitment
April, 17, 2012
By Jared Shanker | ESPN.com

An Ohio State fan growing up just outside of Cleveland in Elyria, Tracy Sprinkle could not allow his allegiances to get in the way of his recruitment. So when Ohio State offered two weeks ago, Sprinkle did not commit on the spot.

After deliberating for two weeks and talking it over with his friends, family and coaches, it turned out Ohio State was still the best option for him. So on Tuesday Sprinkle committed to the Buckeyes.

?I didn?t want to commit as soon as I got the offer,? Sprinkle said. ?I talked to my brothers, family and coaches ... and prayed on it and it came up I wanted to commit to them.?

Nice scouting report on Tracy by John McCallister....

Since 1989, I have worked to provide the best information on Ohio's top high school football prospects to colleges. I'm a former high school English teacher and football coach with a passion for Ohio high school football.

Congrats to Elyria's Tracy Sprinkle

Elyria High School's Tracy gave a verbal to Ohio State University last night. Really glad for him. Listed at 6'4-270, he is really athletic and stays on his feet. Playing DE at Elyria, but I would hope that he moves inside for the Buckeyes. With the spread offense, quick and fast tackles are imperative.

When I watched him play last fall, I was impressed most of all that he played every play. Elyria was getting beaten by a good Hudson team, but Tracy took no plays off. Also liked the way he encouraged his teammates. Comes off the edge well. Changes direction. Relentless on pursuit.

Also in the article were some comments made by his head football coach. "He was a virtual unknown until he had 80 tackles, eight sacks, and 25 QB hurries as a junior." He went on to say, "He had no recognition until the end of his junior year. He had no rating at all. The only rating he had was after Ohio State offered. Then it was like, 'Who is this guy?'"

Contd....

Gotta love the pass rush talent that Meyer is starting to amass...Kid seems solid in the little bit of film I have watched...If he his not a legit 270 right now he will certainly weigh that by the time he gets serious playing time...

College football: Tracy Sprinkle latest Pioneer to go D-I; picks OSU
Filed by Chris Sweeney April 18th, 2012 in Sports.

ELYRIA ? Elyria High has another lineman going to a Division I college. Junior defensive end Tracy Sprinkle committed to Ohio State on Tuesday, turning down 13 other offers to play for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

?It?s a big relief because now I can focus on the upcoming season,? he said. ?I can train, lift and not worry about the recruiting process.?

Sprinkle narrowed his choices to Michigan State, Arkansas, Penn State, Syracuse and Ohio State before ultimately choosing the Buckeyes. The new coaching staff, the feeling he got when he visited the campus and the fact that it wasn?t too far from home all factored into Sprinkle?s decision. It also helped that he?s been a Buckeyes fan all his life.

Elyria High has been a hotbed for Division I linemen the last four years. Isaiah Byler (offensive tackle) started his career at Bowling Green in 2010, Chase Farris (defensive end) redshirted with the Buckeyes last season and Tad France (offensive tackle) will attend Kent State this fall.

?The linemen work the hardest in our weight room and this sure makes them work harder,? coach Kevin Fell said. ?Kids realize that all that work pays off when they see others going to Division I. When you get a little tradition like that it starts to snowball.?

It also helped to have Farris at Ohio State for questions Sprinkle had about the program. He could always count on Farris to give him an accurate response.

Sprinkle initially came to Fell seeking assistance with a highlight reel for the recruiting process, but Fell told him he wouldn?t need one because he?d be able to sell himself. Based on defensive line coach Mike Vrabel?s reaction when he found out he got him, Sprinkle made an impression.

?When we called Ohio State and told them Tracy was committing, Coach Vrabel was yelling through the phone,? Fell said. ?It felt good to know how excited they were.?

Good looking football player. Made some good reads, excellent speed, great pursuit, and excellent motor. Kid finished plays. Granted it's a highlight reel but the kid shows some very good potential and has some room to grow...hopefully without loosing that speed. Nice pickup by UFM and staff.

For the few who were concerned about a 6'4" DT wrt leverage (even though there are plenty of quality tall DTs), I'd estimate that Sprinkle is around 6'2" from watch him walk by this weekend.

Tracy Sprinkle (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) is a baller. It's hard to ignore that fact, especially when looking through his Facebook page.

But unlike other Ohio State football recruits, his page isn't all about penalties, pigskins and punts. Instead, it's loaded with pictures of himself playing basketball.

From shots as a member of Elyria's hardwood heroes -- the Pioneers reached the Division I regional semifinals or the round of 16 last year -- to frames of playing summer ball, it takes a while to find an image of Sprinkle playing football.
