DT Tommy Togiai (Houston Texans)

Way to do Idaho proud Tommy! Man what a game. It was really fun watching the game at a local Boise bar, everyone was going crazy for every one of Tommy's sacks. DT was the biggest question mark to me on defense and between Tommy and Haskell, I'm beyond confident in the interior DL. Both those guys have flat out brought it so far.

DT Tommy Togiai
Ohio State’s defensive ends are known as disruptive pass-rushers. The Buckeyes send defensive ends to the top of NFL draft boards nearly every year. But it was a defensive tackle on the interior who made the most impact in the pass-rush against Penn State. Tommy Togiai had three sacks against the Nittany Lions — from the nose tackle position. At his position, three sacks in a season is a good number. DaVon Hamilton had six sacks from that spot last year. Togiai reached half of that total in one game. And if he can do that consistently for the Buckeyes, the ability for opponents to key in on defensive ends is gone. And the Ohio State pass-rush will be even scarier than imagined.

“I think I’ve improved a lot from last year,” Togiai said after his sophomore season. “Gained a lot of maturity, too, throughout this year. I think a lot of my technique has improved.

“With the [veterans] just teaching me my steps and all that, helping me out, giving me pointers on how to play nose guard, that helps. Giving me tips on how to get off blocks and get better with my hands, that really helps.”

TOMMY TOGIAI
  • On Saturday's performance: "Just working on my technique. Relying on my technique that I've been coached up by coach J over the years."
  • Togiai says he was surprised at the end of the night that he managed three sacks.
  • His pass rush: "I think it starts with the get-off." He says he tries to "always have a motor."
  • He says Jonathon Cooper and Tuf Borland "bring it every day" and are "unselfish."
  • Togiai says he tries to bring energy and his motor to "drive the defense."
  • He says he's been working on his speed since his freshman season, talking to the strength staff. He thinks it's paying dividends now. He's adjusted his running form.
  • Togiai says Haskell Garrett is playing at an "unbelievable" level.
  • He says he's as confident as ever about this interior defensive line. Thinks they can "do something special."
  • "I think at end spot, we have a lot of guys that go off, that are waiting to go off." He says Taron Vincent is "waiting to have a breakout game, as well."
  • Togiai says he and Garrett created a "close bond over the years." He thinks it helps them on the field. "That camaraderie and stuff like that will really bode well for us."
  • He says they want to stop the run then rush the passer afterward.

And they’ve made a big difference already

several times quarterbacks have retreated to the sideline and expected to have a second or so to find a receiver but found themselves having to throw the ball away because Togiai was tailgating. Penn State’s QB found himself in that position, down two touchdowns late in the game, and threw the ball to Hooker instead of to one of the cardboard cutouts.

One of these Saturdays a QB is going to assume that he has that extra second and he’s going to get Togiaid

“I think I just bring a high motor, high energy to the defense,” Togiai said. “I try to make plays when I can, and I try to bring that energy [up front] so it spreads throughout the rest of the defense. If somebody can make a play on the defensive line, especially sacks or something like that, that brings energy."

“I’m really just trying to do the best I can to try to drive the defense.”

Togiai is providing more than just fuel for the Buckeyes, he’s absolutely wrecking opposing game plans and emerging into a dominant force in the trenches. His team-leading three sacks are obviously a bit surprising considering all the pass-rushing firepower at Ohio State, but it’s really the fact that he’s now third on the team in tackles that jumps off the stats sheet to show just how impactful he’s been for the defense as a a whole.

The scary part for the rest of the Big Ten: Togiai is only getting better.

Bump. Watched the MSU game again and man was it crucial to pluck Tommy out of Southern Idaho. Kid can't be moved and he's disrupting damn near every play. It's been a short year but I think Tommy and Haskell have been the most disruptive interior DL I've ever seen here.

There has to be some reason why other teams cannot run.
