Ohio State football: DT Tommy Togiai could provide instant impact

Though Ohio State returned its most highly regarded defensive tackle, there will still be an opportunity this year for a newcomer to crack the rotation.

And while he’s just a couple of months removed from high school, early enrollee Tommy Togiai appears to be a strong candidate to bolster the rotation alongside four returning juniors. The 4-star defensive tackle in the Class of 2018 came on strong at the end of his high school career, impressing evaluators and surging up recruiting rankings. He finished as the No. 3-ranked defensive tackle and No. 55 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings.

“He’s probably the strongest player we’ve ever had in our program,” Pocatello (Idaho) Highland coach Gino Mariani told Land of 10. “Physically, he’s a specimen. His dad would take him every day after school and they’d meet at Gold’s Gym. His dad was a big lifter. He’s physically very strong, but he has great athletic ability. He’s very agile for his size [6-foot-3] and weight [290] and has great speed. His senior year he ran a 4.9 [40-yard dash] and has great quickness. He has all the tools.”

The Buckeyes have no shortage of defensive tackles on the roster, but only Dre’Mont Jones and Robert Landers have played a significant amount of snaps. Though there are 10 defensive tackles on the roster, six have never recorded a tackle for loss or sack at the FBS level (Antwuan Jackson is a junior college transfer who redshirted his only season at Auburn).
