DT Johnathan "Big Hank" Hankins (Seattle Seahawks)

Sounds like I am alone in thinking this, but if he is only good for one play per series now (I know that es an exaggeration and will improve as the season progresses) is depth enough of an issue that it is worth burning a RS? Folks are high on Goebel as well and Bellamy has a year in the program. And Hankins is not likely to see special teams duty.

I think the "only good for one play" stuff is a little exaggerated. First of all, it's camp, which isn't really like the games, or even scrimmages for that matter. These guys are going hard every single day, in 100 degree heat no less. Second of all, I'm sure it's not like he just lays down when he's tired. The primary role he will play early on here is just eating up blocks.

My thought is, if he is only good for 8-10 plays per game but those plays force a field goal instead of giving up a TD or focing a punt because they can't pick up a 3rd and 1, then I say play him. Goebel is not quite the run-stuffer hankins is...

I don't think we play any teams early on who are particularly strong running the ball. That should give plenty of time for the staff to determine if DT depth is going to be a major issue or not. I'd hate to see a redshirt come off in the middle of October, but it probably makes more sense than blowing it against Marshall when you're unsure of its necessity.

Personally, I'm of the mind that you redshirt a guy unless you think he's going to be a contributor. That accounts for the depth in front of him to some extent, but you always want your best guys on the field - regardless of their age.

Absolutely true for the top 11. But when you are talking about subs the question becomes how often they will see the field. You never want to RS a player who will be gone in four regardless. But that would be a stretch for Hankins at this stage.

So the question becomes do you want trade a year of Hankins with zero experience in 2010 for a year of Hankins with four years in the program in 2014. That trade is the likely cost of pulling the RS.

Well, I think you have to look at the mid-range prospects of an RS, too. Next year, we'll have Simon, Bellamy, and Goebel at DT: only Simon has managed to earn solid PT so far. Is it better to have RS Big Hank to supplement that line, or Sophomore Big Hank? I tend to lean toward the latter, so maybe not using an RS this year makes sense. However, I really think the big factor for the coaches is whether or not he's fit and able to contribute AT ALL. If he can help the team right now, they'll play him. They've got along track record of doing this, and I'm positive it's the heuristic that they'll use.

Does he have a chance to start next year if he plays this year? If the answer is yes, play him regardless of the perceived logjam there. So far Hankins has been making just as much noise if not more than the other young players. And we all know what they say about pups that bite early.

Game day is 180 from practice. He may be 100% for 2 or 3 plays at a time right now, but once the adrenaline of game day gets going, that should double or even more.

That means 15-20 plays per game, possibly, vs 8 to 10. Worth burning the RS in that case imo. No substitute for game experience.

Gata play him and I think it's quite obvious too.... Someone with his size you just can't simulate the effect he can have. He seems to move well too to boot. He'll be in the two deep pretty soon and he'll be the freshman to make the biggest impact IMO.

talking about true freshman with conditioning issues and how they are going to light up the world sounds a lot like the back and forth they have up north, just my two cents, carry on

(with the obvious difference being that we aren't depending on said true freshman to save our team, but it still seems over the top to me)

Well I think they certainly won't make him a mainstay for a whole defensive series, but he can definately be put in to give guys a spell without seeing much drop off. Later in the year too when it cools down that should increase the amount of reps he's able to go full tilt, not to mention his conditioning will only imrove day in and day out.
