DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

Does anyone know if Garrett is coming in early to work with the strength coach?

Not sure I understand ?....."early" as in when?? Garrett's wrestling season has began (Ends mid-March 08) and he does not graduate until June 1st. If you want more precise details PM me (after reading below)

What I can tell you is that this "wrestling season" will be quite different than in past as far as training. Unfortunately for his teamates Garrett MUST spend less time in wrestling room to allow for ongoing STRENGTH & SPEED TRAINING (It is ABSOLUTELY SENSELESS for Garrett to spend 30 minutes each day running around in circles on a wrestling mat for "conditioning purposes"..he just finished a 16 week football season playing both ways & never has HAD TIME TO GET OUT OF SHAPE!!!) Not to mention 90%+ of his matches will last less than 120 seconds!!!

List of "FINALISTS" now down to THREE

Unfortunately the list of "finalists'" forgot to include two other nominees, one being QB John Weinke (sp?) who has verbally commited to MICHIGAN.
This player is also the only OFFENSIVE nominee who plays a high profile / skilled position. My bet is either Weinke or Steve Filer.

***Garrett WAS NOT EVEN AWARE OF THIS AWARD, NOR WILL IT CHANGE HIS CURRENT SHORT / LONG TERM GOALS. He takes pride in TEAM AWARDS / ACCOMPLISHMENTS but individual recognition has not motivated / excited him too much

Three finalists for I.H.S.A / FoxSports "Illinois High School Football Player of the Year" are Steven Filer,LB (Mt. Carmel), Sean Cwynar, DT (Marian Central Catholic), & Garrett Goebel...you better know him (or shall I say "in due time you will recognize his name...GOD WILLING!!")

The award winner / ceremony will be featured live (Sat.Nov. 24th) @ halftime of Class 7A State Championship game at Memorial Stadium, Champaign, IL (Sorry but I do not know what channel / station is broadcasting this however Garrett+Parents attendance is requested by FoxSports)

ESPN rates Garrett as the No. 2 pass rushing DT

2. Garrett Goebel (Villa Park, Ill./Montini)/Ohio State

The battle for this spot came down between two Illinois natives, Goebel and Sean Cwynar (McHenry, Ill./Marian Central Catholic), but after some more film study, I felt Goebel had the edge. In high school he plays some end and tackle, and that experience rushing off the edge will help him in college. He is a tall kid who can obstruct passing lanes, but more importantly, it is his ability to work some moves to defeat blockers. He will use his hands to keep a blocker off of him and can work the swim move to pull by a blocker. He is not the most fluid-moving tackle prospect in this class, but he has a feel for getting his hips turned to make himself skinny and slip by a blocker.

Maybe it's just me, but Garrett doesn't seem like the kinda kid who gives a crap about this stuff. So I doubt it matters much to him, and it sure doesn't matter to us since we're just thrilled to have him as part of the Buckeye family.
