And there?s Doug Worthington, who was signed last August. He?s big and is better vs. the run than Scott, who is considered more of a rusher. But he?s been active for only three games in two seasons and has yet to play.

Camp battle: The rotation seems fairly set, at least entering camp. Jenkins is the No. 3 end and Golston, provided he?s healthy, would be No. 4. Scott must hold off Worthington and Balmer among others. Neild has to hold off Baker, but without having seen much of the latter it?s tough to predict the incumbent won?t retain the job.

St. Francis product Doug Worthington made three tackles, including one for a loss, for the Redskins.

The hulking 6-foot-5, 311-pounder was playing his first game as a professional at the Ralph.

"It was a blessing," Worthington said, who had his high school coach, Jerry Smith, next to him during warm-ups.

Worthington has been running with the second and third units with the Redskins during camp.

"It's going really well," he said. "Improving every practice. They're giving me a great chance."

Doug Worthington fighting for spot with Redskins
August 10, 2012

By Jay Skurski

Doug Worthington kept his undefeated record against Naaman Roosevelt intact.

The former St. Francis and current Washington Redskins defensive end again got the best of his one-time St. Joe?s rival at Ralph Wilson Stadium, leaving town Thursday night with a 7-6 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

?I said what?s up to Naaman a couple times,? Worthington said. ?After the game I talked a little junk to him. I beat him a couple times on this field previously, so it was good to keep a 3-0 record against him.?

Worthington is fighting for a reserve spot along the Redskins? defensive line.

?He?s done a good job. He played well [Thursday]. He?s working with the third unit, but [has been] pretty impressive,? Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. ?This is as deep as a defensive line I?ve had in a long time. [There?s] going to be a lot of guys fighting for a position, and he is one of those guys.?

Defensive lineman Doug Worthington also finds himself fighting for a spot in an already crowed area of the roster.

For a second straight year, the 25-year-old Ohio State graduate shined during the preseason. He impressed with his strength, routinely overpowering opposing lineman.

?I had a great preseason, but so did everybody on the d-line,? Worthington said. ?It?s a tough battle for the coaches. I?m glad I just threw my name in the hat.?

An injury to Chris Neild and the sudden departure of Kentwan Balmer afforded him increased opportunities, which he has tried to capitalize on.

?The coach has been finding more faith in me, so it?s been working out pretty well in my favor,? he said.

Entering his third season in the league, Worthington also understands this is a business. He?s gone through the cut process time before and is looking at the future with realistic optimism.

?Luckily I do have some (practice) squad eligibility, so hopefully I will have a job with the Washington Redskins,? he said, adding he really enjoys the locker room and his teammates.

Worthington spent the majority of last season on the practice squad before he was elevated to the main roster late in the year.

Brian Orakpo, Adam Carriker done for season
Posted by Mike Jones on September 17, 2012

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said outside linebacker Brian Orakpo and defensive end Adam Carriker will both miss the remainder of the season because of injuries.

Carriker suffered a torn quad tendon near the base of his right knee, Shanahan said. Orakpo has a torn left pectoral muscle, the the same muscle that he tore at the end of last season and had surgery on.

Shanahan said defensive end Doug Worthington will be activated off of the practice squad. He said Jarvis Jenkins takes over as starter for Carriker. And Rob Jackson will take over for Orakpo.

LB Markus White, DL Doug Worthington to replace Brian Orakpo, Adam Carriker on Redskins' roster
By Rich Campbell - The Washington Times
September 18, 2012

The season-ending muscle tears linebacker Brian Orakpo and defensive end Adam Carriker suffered Sunday have created an opportunity for two Redskins prospects to return to the active 53-man roster.

Defensive lineman Doug Worthington was promoted from the Redskins' practice squad Tuesday, according to a source.

And outside linebacker Markus White tweeted Tuesday morning about returning to the Redskins. White, one of Washington's seventh-round draft picks in 2011, was with Tampa Bay's practice squad after the Redskins waived him as part of the final roster cut-down earlier this month.

Worthington was on the 53-man roster for the final weeks of last season but was inactive for both games. At 6-5 and 311 pounds, he demonstrated power playing against reserves during the preseason. Consistency with his leverage is a main focus.

After Two Seasons, Doug Worthington Ready For Greater Role
By ZAC BOYER
[email protected] | @ZacBoyer

ASHBURN ? Doug Worthington spent the first two weekends watching the Washington Redskins? games at a sports bar. He?ll have a much better view of the action this weekend.

Worthington was signed from the Redskins? practice squad to the 53-man roster on Tuesday to replace Adam Carriker, who was placed on injured reserve after tearing the quadriceps tendon in his right knee against St. Louis.

The Redskins promoted the 6-foot-5, 311-pound defensive end for the final two games last season, but he was inactive for each. He was also inactive for Tampa Bay in the final game in 2010.

There?s no guarantee Worthington, more of a run stopper, will be active for the Redskins on Sunday, either, as he?s been working mostly on the scout team in practice this week. Jarvis Jenkins will start in Carriker?s place, Kedric Golston will continue to fill in on run downs and reserve nose tackle Chris Baker can also play on the end.

?I can?t say it?s nothing but a blessing to be able to be on that sideline, to get in the game, get a little bit of action and get on the field this year,? Worthington said. ?It?s tremendous. There?s not a lot of words that can describe it.?

Worthington credits Carriker and Stephen Bowen for helping him learn the nuances of the position and defensive line coach Jacob Burney for doing ?tremendous [work] with me the last year and a half.?

He gained confidence from the preseason, where he had nine tackles over four games. These games, finally, will count.

?You know, I?ve been practice squad for a few years now and have been working my tail off, and just to get an opportunity is a blessing,? Worthington said.?
