DT Dexter Larimore (official thread)

Dex is a forgotten man among our starters I believe in large part because of his lack of tackles. He does all the dirty work in the trenches that helps our our D-linemen and LBs get the tackles.

The article brings up a great point about Purdue... he could have been a difference maker in that loss if he had been healthy.

He quietly could be an MVP candidate for our defense, given what he does to free up our other Linemen and LB's, plus the tremendous work he does for us in the run game.

I believe, that John Simon is going to bring the same element at the other Tackle position but in a more explosive capacity

IT'S GOOD TO HAVE BIG DEXTER BACK ... Senior defensive tackle Dexter Larimore has been a force during fall camp, eating up everything that has come his way.

After missing four games last season due to a knee injury he suffered against Indiana midway through the year, Larimore has come back bigger, stronger and more intense. He has been a beast on the defensive front, especially getting to the quarterback.

Senior offensive guard Justin Boren said Larimore can do it all.

"Dexter's a great bull rusher," Boren said. "He's 315 pounds at the nose. He can plug the run, you know, and when he's healthy he definitely helps us out on defense."

During last Saturday's jersey scrimmage at Ohio Stadium, Larimore recorded a sack of the elusive Pryor.

Of course, he didn't take much credit for it.

"It's because of our defensive ends getting good penetration on our stunts," Larimore said. "A lot of that has to do with those guys really getting penetration. Cam (Heyward) and Johnny (Simon) and (Adam) Bellamy really getting in there so I can come around free. So anytime I come around free it's probably attributed to our defensive ends."

So, does it ever happen because of his greatness?

"Maybe ... sometimes," Larimore smiled. "It's mostly guys doing their job, and me doing mine."

Michigan quarterback Nick Sheridan can't escape Ohio State's Dexter Larimore, a Merrillville grad, during last season's Big Ten action.

Most all-state high school football players couldn't make it to Ohio State, where the VIP guest list is by invitation only.

And few are prouder than fifth-year senior defensive tackle Dexter Larimore, knowing his sport funds the other 35 on campus.

Coach Jim Tressel's 94-21 record includes five bowl victories and a national title. Each of his last five seasons has produced 10 wins or more.

"At this point, they'd run us out of town if we hadn't," Tressel said jokingly.

Larimore is among 16 returning starters, six on defense, hoping to lead OSU to a conference record sixth consecutive crown this season.

Surrounded by prep All-Americans at every turn, Tressel is particularly thrilled to have the 6-foot-2, 310-pound Merrillville grad on his sideline.

"What do I expect of Dexter? Leadership, toughness," Tressel said. "The position he plays, he's gonna have two or three guys blocking him all the time, so he's not gonna get the star-studded numbers.

"But you're gonna get impact from him. You're gonna get presence from him. You're gonna have to account for him. Plus, he's a tremendous leader on and off the field."
"I have a great feeling about this team," Larimore said. "We're very together this year, and our senior leadership has been outstanding. We've been through so much with the (three) bowl games that we've lost (to Florida, LSU and Texas).

"I think the younger guys understand how that feels and what can happen if you get a little too much confidence. We know what we need to do."

Though he's a top-notch defensive tackle, Dexter Larimore breaks the mold of a typical football player -- he indulges his free-form creativity through sculpture

The Ohio State senior defensive tackle is immersed in X's and O's, in how to get from Point A to Point B, in angles and schemes and game plans that require strict and precise adherence.

By night, Larimore views the world however he wants.

Often, he goes home to his pottery wheel, where his creations are abstract _ curves and swirls and loops that don't fit neatly anywhere but in his mind's eye.

"It's two different worlds," Larimore said. "Football is about coaches telling you what to do and how it needs to be done. You can't say, `That doesn't look like how I want to do it.'

"Art, for me, I have more creative license to do what I think looks right. It isn't all about perfect symmetry _ pulling out a tape measure to see if this is square. With art, I let my mind wander and make it look how I want it to."

He has thrived in both worlds.

A former high school wrestling champion, the 6-foot-2, 310-pound Larimore has played in 40 games for OSU, with 13 starts. This year, he is fifth on the team in tackles with 16, including four tackles for loss and 1 sacks.

Larimore has gained notoriety for his art, as well. In the summer of 2009, his work was selected to be displayed as part of a student artist exhibition at the NCAA's annual convention in Washington, D.C.

Larimore, OSU hoping to go out on a positive note

C'mon. You know this.

It's Merrillville grad Dexter Larimore, voted Defensive Lineman of the Year at Ohio State.

No. 6 OSU (11-1) plays No. 8 Arkansas (10-2) in tonight's Sugar Bowl at the Louisiana Superdome.

A fifth-year senior tackle, Larimore's football career in Columbus is rich in both personal and team accomplishments.

Tonight marks the fourth bowl game he will play in, a list which also includes the Rose, Fiesta and 2008 BCS title game against LSU -- plus five Big Ten Conference championships.

The 6-foot-2, 310-pounder has played in 48 of 52 games during his career at Ohio State.

"It's pretty crazy how time flies. I have little left as an active player at Ohio State," Larimore said. "Ohio State is a family, obviously, and I'll always have the friendships. But you aren't gonna be able to put those pads on. You're not gonna be able to play those games. You're gonna have to watch them either from the stands or on TV.

"It's kinda tough to think that soon it's gonna be over and I'm gonna be an alumni."

The emotional merry-go-round doesn't stop there.

"It's also scary because you really don't know what's gonna happen," Larimore said. "In the next couple months, I have no clue where I'm gonna be, what state I'm gonna be in, or what I'm gonna be doing.

"It's a business so you don't know if you're gonna be on a team or whether you're gonna be 'their guy' or you're not gonna be 'their guy.' I've just been trying to focus on each day."

It's too early to talk about the NFL pre-draft combine in Indianapolis, but if for some reason Larimore isn't invited, there are other options.

"Ohio State still has their combine and I believe last year something like 20 or 23 (NFL) teams came to it," he recalled. "So I'll still have that exposure."

But at the moment, all focus and energy is directed toward stopping an Arkansas offense averaging 490 yards per game with quarterback Ryan Mallett (30 touchdowns, 3,592 yards) and running back Knile Davis (1,183 yards, 13 TDs) leaning on the throttle.

Davis has done his damage in just seven games.

The OSU defense is allowing 13.3 ppg. but has only 19 sacks compared to the 37 of the Razorbacks.

Buckeye Nation doesn't care. It demands victory.

"When you do set the bar that high, good things usually happen for us because we expect so much out of ourselves and the coaches expect so much out of us," Larimore said.

"Honestly, Columbus expects that much out of us. It's a tough town. Nowadays, like last year and this year, if you don't go the the national title game, it's almost a disappointment."

Dexter Larimore
DT, Ohio State

War Room analysis
Strengths: Has good size and good strength to develop for the position at the next level. Does an adequate job of holding the point of attack against a double team. Shows above average overall instincts and toughness in his play. Competes hard and gives a good effort to finish to the ball.

Weaknesses: Has limited lateral quickness, range, speed to make many plays outside a short area along the line of scrimmage. Has only marginal body control and balance on the move. Struggles to disengage from blockers as a run defender. Has been unable to lock-down the starting job thus far in his career. Has also had trouble staying healthy.

Bottom line: He is a marginal overall athlete with limited upside to develop for the next level.
