DT Cameron Heyward (6x Pro Bowl, 3x All Pro, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Just how fast/quick is this guy?

Rivals has an unofficial 5.17 and Scout has an unofficial 4.9. I would tend to think the Rivals numbers might be a tad closer (as almost every HS recruit's 40-time is inflated...or deflated as it were). His first step looks decent in his senior film. I think he has good quickness for a kid his size, as evident by his also being a highly-touted basketball player.

thoughts on Cam making the 2 deep? How does he stack up against the likes of Denlinger? Considering how many guys we rotate what does his PT look like?
IMO he would have to have a great spring and /or fall to get into the 2 deep. And unless he does that he won't get much PT at all.

IMO he won't gain so much as to slow himself down. He will be behind all these guys at the start. It depends on how much he desires and progresses.
Gholston
Wilson
Denlinger
Worthington
Rose
Barrow
Larimore
Ryan Williams
Of course not all these guys play his postion but JT may mix and match next spring.

My take: I could see Heyward being in the mix if someone goes down, but I think there is adequate depth for next season and could lead to Heyward redshirting. Denlinger has been getting rave reviews and I still think Rose is going to slide down, considering he got some reps there during bowl practice. Barrow, Worthington and Larimore can also contribute at DT. Garnier and Abdallah have not shown much as of yet. Offensive and defensive lineman are some of the most likely to redshirt because they need to add size and the position is much more complicated than it is in high school. Many defensive lineman dominate in high school purely because of their size and speed, not their technique. Heyward is your potential proto-typical pass-rushing DT under Heacock. Last year he had one wide body who could stay low to take on extra blockers (Pitcock) and one guy who could shoot gaps (Patterson).

Excellent points by wad. If I might add, the sheer physicality/intensity level at the college level is so much greater, especially in the interior. A true freshman at age 17/18 is going up against an older, more physically mature, and technically sound opponent. Throw in the fact that the older player has spent a greater amount of time in a collegiate strength and conditioning program. I'm not saying it can't be done (play as a freshman), and Heyward certainly seems to have the size and athleticism desired, but I am of the opinion it's better to take a more patient approach. One more thing, I think this is a huge pick up for the Bucks. It will be interesting to see the development of Heyward over the next year or two.

Scout

Signed and Faxed.

AWESOME! Welcome Mr. Heyward. Cameron "salvaged" (don't know if it applies since we were already having a good class before he committed) some of the Buckeye fans from drowning in their own pity. At any rate, we all hope you a successful college career and an unbelievable college experience for the next 4 years.
