Doug Flutie Retires After 21 Seasons

The Associated Press

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Quarterback Doug Flutie is retiring after 21 seasons in professional football. The announcement is being made by Flutie and the Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

The 43-year-old quarterback played 12 seasons in the NFL. He also played in the USFL and the Canadian Football League, winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award six times and the league's Grey Cup championship three times.

Flutie finishes with 14,715 passing yards and 86 touchdowns in the NFL, spending most of his time as a backup. He played in five games for the Patriots last season, attempting just 10 passes and also converting the league's first drop-kick for an extra point since the 1941 NFL title game.

Flutie became a free agent after one season with the team, playing sparingly as a backup quarterback.

Flutie said Saturday he has spoken regularly with Belichick and wanted to consider all his options including offers to go into broadcasting before making an announcement. Belichick declined Sunday to comment on any discussions he had with Flutie.

During the first two days of the team's rookie minicamp, which began Saturday, Flutie's locker was occupied by kicker Stephen Gostkowski, the team's fourth-round draft choice from Memphis.

"I think I know what I want to do," Flutie said on Saturday in an interview with The Associated Press. "I just want to make sure I have everything on the table before I do anything."

Flutie was the Heisman Trophy winner at Boston College in 1984.
