Donovan McNabb (official thread)

melrun78;837947; said:
It isn't this one instant, but more over the last few years as he complains about any difficult situation that he has anything to do with. Sure, this by itself is not a big deal but every thing that comes up w/ in the Eagles does not need to have Donovan McNabb's personal opinion stamped on it.
Then complain about those other things, b/c trading away a first rounder and drafting McNabb's successor certainly is grounds for McNabb's personal opinion.

Who is your NFL team?

Point out where I backtracked.

I made my point quite clearly. Philly has a right to pick who they want and McNabb has a right to be affected by it. As I expressed from the beginning, and in that post, Kolb was a bit of a reach... especially after passing on a first rounder.50% of everyone here was expecting Philly to take Kolb, or 50% think it's an okay pick after the fact.
I'm far from an Eagles expert, so I'll refer to NFLDC:
Other draft takes:

You believe the media would settle for the 'no response' option with regard to TO? Limbaugh?

You reference Kobe as someone who never complains? I agree THIS season he's handled himself well, but he's certainly let the media get to him in the past.

OK, first of all, this is all speculation. Many a top draft pick will fail and many who seemed like bad picks will work out great so speculating what will happen in the future should be saved for a different conversation.

Seconly, I will concede that maybe Phily should have taken a WR instead of QB/DE in their first two picks. They are obviously a little thin there but I think you could make a strong argument that they need a QB given that they just lost only strong backup and how often McNabb is hurt. However, saying Kolb was a bad selection because they didn't need a QB or that there were other higher rated QB's left doesn't hold much water with me. Phily's managment obviously isn't happy with their current backups and wanted to bring in someone who could be the future of the organization. Thus, you probably aren't going to be able to wait till round 6 or 7 to get a top-knotch QB. Kolb might be a "sytem" QB but maybe Reid likes what this kid can do and thinks he can put him in their system or build a system around him.

On another line of thinking, I think we would all say Troy has the ability to be a better QB than what the draft showed. However, if Phily had taken Troy, wouldn't we be hearing the same argument. My point is, no one knows if this is going to be great for Phily in a few years or if they will regret it. I just think Donovan's first comment to the media shouldn't be "I was shocked." I think he should have said I am excited, I want to work with him and take him under my wing, he will be a great backup and could be the future of this team, etc...

To me, his comments indicate he feels threatened and I don't think anyone in his position has any right to feel that way. McNabb has been THE QB for this team over the last 8+ years and it is his job to lose. He had his best year a few years back and if he can stay healthy there is no reason he doesn't have a few strong years left. However, making a big deal out of this does nothing but start a media riot where there doesn't need to be one.

I think he feels threatened as well, and yes, he does have the right to feel that way. Does he have the right to be upset about it and rip the organization? No. And I don't think he did that.

What did Phily get for that first round pick?

I'm a Bengals fan.
Dallas did some stellar dealing in the draft.

Trade 1 (Browns):
Give: #23
Get: #36 from Clev, #1 in '08 from Clev (likely top-15)

Trade 2 (Eagles):
Give: #36 (from Clev), #87, #159
Get: 26th

End result:
Give: late 1, early 2, late 3, late 5 (#23, #36, #87, #159)
Get: late 1, early 1 in '08 (#26, likely top-15 from Clev)

Trading a 2, 3 & 5 for a top-15 pick? Stellar work, cowboys.

Some speculation about the eagles-cowboys trade:
Some Cowboys fans wanted the team to take a wide receiver in Round 1, but as the Dallas Morning News's Todd Archer writes, you can never have too many linebackers in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme, so that's why Anthony Spencer was the No. 1 pick. Archer notes that the team had 21 players with a first-round grade and speculates on who else, after Spencer, might've been on the list:
I believe the group included cornerback Aaron Ross, receivers Dwayne Bowe and Robert Meachem and safety Brandon Meriweather. Having moved down to No. 36 thanks to the trade with Cleveland, the Cowboys quickly had to get back into the first round with Ross (No. 20), Bowe (No. 23) and Meriweather (No. 24) gobbled up.
But here's the thing: Dallas knew Spencer and Meachem wouldn't be available early in the second round, so the Eagles did them a solid by letting them trade back into the first round. A favor, Archer points out, Philly might end up regretting ... especially after the first time Spencer sacks Donovan McNabb.

But maybe that was Andy Reid's plan all along -- and I'm only half-kidding -- to insure against another McNabb injury. With Jeff Garcia now in Tampa, the Eagles no longer have their closer. Sure, Kevin Kolb is a seemingly weird pick, but it makes a lot of sense when you think about McNabb's inability to stay healthy and the fact that he's 30 years old.

Of course, Cowboys fans don't care about any of this; they're just excited to have an extra 2008 first-round pick, another potential DeMarcus Ware in Anthony Spencer, and two chances a year to unleash Spencer on the team that allowed Dallas to draft him in the first place.

McNabb practices ahead of schedule

ROB MAADDI

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Donovan McNabb took a major step forward in his return from knee surgery, practicing with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday several weeks ahead of schedule.
The five-time Pro Bowl quarterback participated in non-contact drills in his first action on the field since he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Nov. 19.
"It felt great to get back out there on the field with all of the guys," McNabb said. "It's just part of the rehab process and hopefully good things will continue to come. It's important to continue to monitor my progress, but also be smart about the whole situation."

McNabb will practice with Eagles

ROB MAADDI

Associated Press

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Donovan McNabb was cleared to practice when the Philadelphia Eagles take the field for the first time Saturday.
The five-time Pro Bowl quarterback hasn't played in a game since he tore a ligament in his right knee on Nov. 19. He participated in the team's final minicamp last month, but it wasn't a certainty he would start training camp on time.
"He feels good and he'll be ready to roll," coach Andy Reid said Friday. "We'll keep a close eye on him and just see how he does. He'll probably start out with a brace for precautionary measures. It's his right leg, his plant leg, so we'll see how he does the first three days. I'm going to take it slow with him."

Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Donovan McNabb faces pass rush in first real practice

By ROB MAADDI, AP Sports Writer
August 1, 2007

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) -- Donovan McNabb felt the pressure, escaped the rush, scrambled to his right and completed a pass. Same old McNabb.

Despite a bulky knee brace protecting his surgically repaired right knee, the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback had no problems facing a pass rush for the first time Wednesday.

Sure, McNabb wore a red jersey, meaning defensive players couldn't actually touch him. But so did the other quarterbacks. Still, he moved around the pocket well and threw crisp passes to his targets during the Philadelphia Eagles' first full practice in pads. McNabb even jumped into a receivers drill at one point and ran a route, drawing cheers from a huge crowd gathered at Lehigh University.

McNabb ready to play

Eagles QB to take field for first time since knee injury

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Once Donovan McNabb eludes a sack and scrambles for a gain, most observers will say that No. 5 is back.
The five-time Pro Bowl quarterback doesn't need to break a long run or endure a hard hit to convince himself he's ready. He already knows. Now he just has to do it before a huge crowd anxiously waiting to see how the franchise player responds to his first action in nine months.
McNabb will play his first game since tearing a knee ligament last November when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Carolina Panthers on Friday night in a preseason game.

McNabb: Not ready yet, but getting close despite loss to Steelers
Monday, August 27, 2007

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Ben Roethlisberger has had a half like this in an exhibition game, yet he wasn?t close to being satisfied. So imagine how Donovan McNabb felt.

Right now, McNabb said after a 27-13 Eagles loss in Pittsburgh on Sunday night, that?s not very good. The Eagles quarterback probably has taken his last snap of the preseason but, with the games that count fast approaching, he?s still not there yet.

McNabb?s timing remains off, and the troublesome knee that ended his season with five weeks to go last year isn?t quite right, either. He needed an operation to repair a torn ligament and, eight months later, he isn?t ready to say he?s all the way back.

NFL: McNabb voices frustration over scrutiny of black QBs

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 3:26 AM

NEW YORK (AP) -- Philadelphia Eagles star Donovan McNabb says black quarterbacks face greater scrutiny than their white counterparts.
In an interview on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, McNabb said that black quarterbacks "have to do a little bit extra" because there are relatively few of them, adding "people didn't want us to play this position."
