gotta go with mili on this one. i always thought a hate crime was when the crime was racially/ethnically/sexual orientation-ly motivated. sounds like bad driving was the cause here. if it comes out later the scrawny dude saw a black guy in a car and then went after him, then it's a hate crime.

As Taylor attempted to pass, the driver of the pickup "intentionally swerved directly at Taylor" and caused him to run off the road.
The passenger in the truck, who wasn't charged, allegedly got out and started to bang on the hood of Taylor's trunk. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Taylor then got out of his car and was confronted by the 5-foot-11, 168-pound Burns, who was allegedly yelling racial insults and threatening to kill Taylor, according to a police report.

If they can indeed show that he pulled out in front of him intentionally then yes indeed it could be a hate crime.

If this guy is indded racist as it seems he is then it is not hard to beleive that he did pull out in Taylor on purpose just to be able to confront him, esp if he could tell that Taylor's wife was white. I'm not saying that indeed he was sitting there waiting for some black guy to drive by, but there is a very good chance he saw an oppritunity and took it.

I think the guy's lucky a Dolphin didn't make him an ex-person, since he's a "Dolphin X", per urbandictionary:

never an excuse

Millani, there's never an excuse for "spontaneously uttering racial slurs"... and without knowing all the details, I would say doing that while trying to stick a guy DOES indeed add up to a pretty good example of a hate crime.

I don't know if prior intent is a requirement of being a hate crime, but once he reaches that point of uttering and knifing at the same time, smells like hate crime.

This happens in the south (and the north too) but when the victim is not a 6-6 professional football player it doesn't get the pub.

The guy is a poster child for stupidity, thats for sure.

freedom of speech is gone

Theres been a few times when I'm pissed off at some idiot and I'll say whatever it takes for them to get my point . Thats why I don't drink anymore .

Would it be hate crime when I have black and white friends to say something like that.

If a fat lady is trying to talk to me and I laugh at her is that against
the law:) or make a comment 'I cant afford to buy you dinner:)

This guy better thank his lucky stars he didnt do this to one of the dade county stars. Im not sure if anyone knows about dade county but its one of the worst places i have ever been to. It does seem that they get alot of football talent out of there though.

That's why they have trials. If, during the trial it is proven that race (or sexual preference, or gender, etc.) was one of the prime, if not the sole, motive of the commission of the crime (such as the bombing of the Alabama church in 1964 which killed four black girls, the murdering of that homosexual kid up in Montana in the 1990s, etc.). The simple utterence of a slur doesn't constitute racism. For example, I had a big-ass local guy cut his pickup in front of me at a shopping mall because he said I had cut him off earlier. He got out and came toward my car calling me a "Fucking Haole". When I got out, I initially refrained from using any slurs, but as he kept calling me that, I retaliated by calling him a "Stupid fucking local" and a "Fucking Moke". Now, does that make me a racist? I don't think so, but by your definition it does. By the way, he end up being all bark and no bite as he never made his move and I eventually got tired or yelling with the moron and left.
