DL Will Smith Jr. (Official Thread)

Now a 4star on 247sports

Dublin (Ohio) Coffman 2023 defensive lineman Will Smith, an Ohio State pledge, ascends to four-star 90 status on 247Sports thanks to his impressive performance in his squad's first four games. Here's more in his 247Sports scouting report:

"He's moved around some and played end or shaded inside, but as he has gotten older and grown into his body more, it has becoming increasingly clear that he will be a 3-technique long term. Quick off the ball and is a good penetrator. Also quick with his hands. Plays with good bend and leverage and can get skinny and not allow offensive linemen to get a good punch off on him. In terms of measurables, he isn't going to be the biggest, the longest, or maybe the straight-up fastest prospect, but he plays hard, has great short-area quickness, and is a strong bet to be a productive player at the high-major level." -- Allen Trieu, 247Sports national analyst (Midwest)

That is a nice jump and well-earned, I figured if he was anywhere in the stratosphere of his pops he would be an incredible player. Honestly very pleased to hear that he is likely going to end up at 3-tech, with Smith and Moore (#11 DL on 247) are going to make a heck of a DT combo here. We also have quite a few promising looking DE prospects to pair up on the ends after a stellar DE class last year (Curry, Abor and Jackson), so to have DT basically locked down for this class is nice, especially since the only DT we got in '22 was Kanu. Pretty confident that Junior is going to be a player here.

Both Smith and Reese deserve the bump and are probably a tad underappreciated for current commits. Both are guys I think are going to be staples here...with Smith it is genetics and also a huge uptick in production this year. With Reese I see huge upside, an ideal frame for a LB and athleticism that paired with good coaching will make a great player. Smith is just extra cool because you just have the feeling he is going to do his late father proud playing in the Shoe on Saturdays.

Day said that Smith and his mom asked him a year ago whether he was good enough to play at Ohio State.

“It’s a no-brainer now,” Day said. “He played hard. He played physical, with his hair on fire, and had a lot of production. He’s coming in early, and we think he has a chance to be a very, very good player for us.”

I remember the recruiting class his father was in. How can I possibly be that old already?

went to a meet and greet right before the 2000 season and met Will. He actually held my infant son for a pic. fantastic person in addition to being a monster on field. R.I.P.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE: WILL SMITH JR.
Smith has planned on enrolling early at Ohio State for a long time, trusting in the plan that the Buckeyes have for him to see the field as early as possible.

“They want me as a three-technique, and they want me to be 285 (pounds), somewhere around there,” Smith said about enrolling early on the day of his signing ceremony. “That’s really it. I’ve just been lifting, getting stronger, getting more conditioned and trying to get faster.”

Many fans need no introduction to Smith, as he’s the son of the late Ohio State great Will Smith, a former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year for the Buckeyes. But Smith earned his offer from his offseason work of gaining more than 15 pounds in his senior year offseason and continuing to improve as a player.

“That (his father) wasn't gonna be the reason why we're gonna offer him a scholarship,” Day said. “We saw that motor in his junior film. But we sat down and explained to him what the expectation was if he came here. These are the things that we expect of you to be a Buckeye. And some of those things he and his mom and his family already knew because they had a perspective on that, certainly with his dad's background.”

Whatever difficulties come Smith’s way from the adjustment to high school to college, he’ll have a support system close by to cheer him on, as he comes to OSU by way of Dublin Coffman High School.

“I think it will be a big help,” Smith said of having family nearby. “I’m really glad that my mom will be just 20 minutes away. If I have a problem, I can just go to her.”

IMMEDIATE IMPACT

A four-star prospect, Smith knows he must continue to build muscle and fine-tune his game now that he is a full-time defensive tackle. He weighed 260 pounds when he earned an OSU offer in Jan. 2022, which increased to 268 last June. As an early enrollee, Smith is already up to 290.

“(Ohio State’s coaches) know I have a lot of growth left in me as far as development,” Smith said. “I know the coaches like my motor and how hard I work in a game.”

With that, and considering the two-deep at defensive tackle is completely full, Smith's first season in Columbus will be one for development and likely a redshirt year as he continues to learn and grow under Johnson.

LONG-TERM IMPACT

Smith already sheds blocks with ease and never gives up on a play, sometimes chasing down running backs from behind to make a tackle. That said, he has to continue to develop his technique. If he does that, he could find some playing time at defensive tackle as a sophomore, especially if Michael Hall Jr. and/or Tyleik Williams forgo their senior years and declare for the 2024 NFL draft.

Long-term, Smith could become a dynamic and disruptive 3-technique defensive tackle as long as he maintains his athleticism while continuing to develop his body.
