KETTERING ? Michael Bennett was stuck in a 55-foot rut. And it was getting the best of him.
?I?ve been pretty stagnant,? said the outstanding Centerville High School shot putter.
?I?ve been ready to throw far for too long and I?ve been rushing it. This was the first time I slowed down everything and it worked. I?m starting to get better.?
Bennett uncorked a personal best heave of 57 feet, five inches to win the event at the first day of the Firebird Track & Field Invitational on Thursday, May 6, at Fairmont. He?ll also be a favorite in the discus today.
The meet drew many area boys and girls teams and featured just a handful of field event finals and the 3,200 relay final. Field events resume at 5 p.m. today and all running finals at 6:30 p.m.
Bennett is a massive 6-foot-3, 275-pounder and rare two-way lineman for the Elks in football. Uncommitted, he already has been offered scholarships from most of the big-time BCS football programs, including Ohio State University, Southern California, Alabama, Texas and Florida.
But he could have just as easily been recruited for track.
?If he wasn?t such a tremendous football player he would be very recruitable for track,? said Centerville coach Matt Somerlot.
?He has a lot of options. Everybody?s offered.?
As a freshman at Centerville, Bennett was coerced into joining the track team as a thrower by then assistant Jim Findley. Seems Bennett was a constant in the weight room, and Findley gave him the ultimatum of leaving or joining the historically strong Elks throwers and staying.
?So I told him, OK, I?m a thrower,? said Bennett.
He placed ninth at state as a sophomore in the shot put and discus. This past indoor season he was second at state with a personal record of 57-3.
Then came the lull.
?I was really excited to finally beat that even though it was only by two inches,? Bennett said.
Now, his goal is a top state placing. To do that, he?ll likely need to surpass 60 feet.
?That?s what I?ve been chasing,? he said. ?I?ve hit it more than once in practice, even in meets during the warm-up period. That?s what?s been frustrating to me the last couple months.?
