Newest player in the fold for the Ohio State Buckeyes makes honest admission on why he had to spurn major SEC team​

Perez recently opened up about his decision to flip on the Austin & Birm podcast, admitting he made a mistake by rushing into his commitment to Florida:
“Personally, for me, it feels great. It’s been a lot on the build-up side, and for me, all the offers were such a rush. You know, my sophomore year, I was injured… and in my junior year, I had a broken hand and wrist, but I still played through that adversity. So once the offseason hit, I just started blowing up out of nowhere. Everything was such a rush—like, ‘What should I do?’ I was so excited, and that commitment to Florida… I kind of rushed it because I didn’t really understand the politics of the game today.”

The coaches weren’t particularly pushing me to commit—it was mainly me. I didn’t fully understand everything at the time, and I thought Florida was the best option for me. So I can’t entirely blame myself. But recently, not too long ago, I decommitted. Perez is listed at 6-foot-4 and 360 pounds, though he currently plays much leaner. He has the tools to be a dominant presence in the middle, and his relatively low national ranking (No. 679 overall) likely doesn’t reflect the strides he’s made over the past year.

Said he came in at 373 and is now down to 348 and belly is gone. Said he's on a diet so he doesn't go out to eat. Said when he came in he could bench 225 22 times and now is close to 30 reps.

Also said Cincere looks waaay different now. Like a mini Arvell. Just shook his head and said wait until you see him. Made it sound like he's grown and also leaned up at the same time it's pretty wild. Perez said "my guy got big."

Better Know a Buckeye: Jamir Perez’s Size Could Give Ohio State a True Nose Tackle in the Middle of the Defensive Line​

Depth Chart Outlook​

Perez's unique size and skill put him in a position to potentially earn snaps quickly. While John Walker and Will Smith Jr. are expected to lead the depth chart at nose tackle this season, Perez is Ohio State’s largest defensive tackle by more than 30 pounds, which could make him an asset in goal-line and short-yardage situations as early as his freshman year.

Walker and Smith are both fourth-year seniors in their final two years of eligibility, so Perez has a chance to contend for a starting job no later than his third year, with the potential to push for a regular role in the rotation as a sophomore.
