Childress not discussing Scott's marijuana citation
By JUDD ZULGAD, Star Tribune

Vikings coach Brad Childress said he wanted to talk to Darrion Scott before making any comment on the news that the injured defensive end was cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession on Wednesday afternoon in Charleston, W.Va.
According to an Associated Press story, Scott also was ticketed for failure to signal after being pulled over by officers with Charleston's Metro Drug Unit, according to Lt. Chuck Carpenter, the drug unit's head. Scott was cited and released at the scene.
"I just heard about it while we were out at the [morning] walk-through," Childress said Thursday. "I understand I have a telephone call upstairs that needs to be answered. Karl [Dunbar, the Vikings' defensive line coach] spoke with him. I have not."
Asked if he was disappointed, Childress said: "I wouldn't characterize it any way until I get a chance to talk to him."
Scott's agent, Tim DiPiero, said Thursday night that his client would have no comment at this time.
The incident came two weeks after safety Dwight Smith was cited for marijuana possession and obstructing traffic in downtown Minneapolis. Childress said he still is gathering details on what happened with Smith and to date the veteran has faced no known discipline from the team.
Scott, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, has been on injured reserve since early October because of a broken foot. He has spent much of his time around the Vikings' Winter Park facility rehabilitating the injury but had been allowed to return home to Charleston for Christmas.
Childress said he is willing to let players on injured reserve or the practice squad get some time off depending on the situation.
"We let the practice squad guys go home on Saturday for the holidays," he said. "They came back Wednesday. We kind of move those guys in and out. ... We work with them. It's not an absolute that they are here all the time, but they're going to do their rehab here and most of them are here for the longer period."
Briefly: Defensive end Darrion Scott said he is still open to re-signing with the Vikings but that he will test free agency.
Asked if he has spoken to the Vikings since learning that Kenechi Udeze has leukemia, Scott said, "A little bit, but not much.
"I'm pretty much waiting for free agency to open up and look at all my options," he said.
Asked if he were open to returning to the Vikings, Scott said, "I'm still open to coming back.
"But I don't know. We'll see."
NFL report: As options shrink, Vikings may re-open talks with Darrion Scott
Vikings' 2004 third-round pick available

After a third defensive end signed with another club before visiting the Twin Cities, could the Vikings reignite talks with a familiar face?
"We're not closing that possibility at all," said Darrion Scott's agent, Tim DiPiero.
A third-round draft pick of the Vikings in 2004, Scott has been frustrated since Brad Childress took over as coach in January 2006. Scott, who led the team in sacks in 2006 with 5 1/2, was passed over in the starting lineup by Ray Edwards in 2007, and he was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury for the final 12 games.
"He could have played this year," DiPiero said. "It wasn't that bad an injury."
DiPiero said his client recently received a medical clearance that he can send to teams to show that he's healthy. Scott has a visit scheduled next week, although DiPiero declined to say which team.
"That should help," DiPiero said. "There are teams that could use an excellent and versatile player like him."
With defensive tackle Spencer Johnson having signed with Buffalo, the Vikings are searching for a backup to Kevin Williams and Pat Williams. DiPiero said Scott should appeal to clubs because he can start at defensive end ? he has started 28 of the 48 games he's played in four seasons ? and he is stout enough to swing inside.
Free-agent Darrion Scott visits

The Patriots hosted free-agent DE Darrion Scott at Gillette Stadium today.
The 6-foot-3, 289-pound Scott entered the NFL as a third-round draft choice of the Minnesota Vikings in 2004. He has played in 48 career games, with 28 starts. His most productive seasons, stats-wise, came in 2005 and 2006 when he totaled 104 tackles and 9.5 sacks.
The Ohio State alum, who is 26, played in just four games last season due to a fractured foot. He later drew attention with some negative off-the-field headlines.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings free agent defensive end Darrion Scott was arrested for assault in Eden Prairie on Wednesday.
Around 3:30 p.m. Eden Prairie police executed a search warrant on Scott?s home on Lilac Drive, looking for evidence to suggest an assault. Scott was taken to the Eden Prairie Police Department for questioning, was arrested and will be taken to the Hennepin County Jail for booking, according to police.
Police say the alleged assault was physical in nature, but gave no other details. No charges have been filed.
Agent says Scott is innocent of charges

As former Vikings defensive lineman Darrion Scott remained in police custody Thursday, his agent called the arrest a "mistake" and said Scott will seek a speedy trial to "prove his innocence."
Scott was arrested Wednesday at his Eden Prairie home for "probable cause felony assault." The police report was not available Thursday, but a city spokeswoman said the county attorney likely will issue a complaint today.
Scott, 26, was arrested around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and booked into Hennepin County jail on one count of assault, one count of assault/domestic and one count of malicious punishment of a child. A search warrant was executed at his residence.
In a statement, agent Tim DiPiero said Scott did not abuse the child involved in the case. Scott's family in West Virginia is "naturally upset and appalled at the charges," DiPiero said.
DiPiero added: "Anyone who knows Darrion knows him to be a big 'teddy bear' type of guy, easygoing and never loud or abrasive. We believe this nightmare is a terrible mistake and that the child has not been abused, at least not by Darrion."
DiPiero said Scott has hired local defense attorney Joe Friedberg.
Scott, a third-round pick by the Vikings in 2004 from Ohio State, is an unrestricted free agent.
The Vikings appeared to have little interest in bringing him back before this incident; he has had visits with New England and Washington. Scott's 2007 season was cut short after four games when he landed on injured reserve because of a broken foot.
