Does anybody here have Direct TV and would be willing to answer some questions?

When my parents had Direct TV when I was in high school, we only had it for 1 TV. The other TVs had basic cable. The TV with DTV also had basic cable for local channels.

Questions:
  1. Back then my parents were told we could get more DTV boxes, but we could only watch one channel at a time....no matter how many TVs had the DTV boxes. Is this still true?
  2. Does it come with a DVR/Tivo type thing?
  3. Does it still fuck up during storms?

1) That's not the case anymore.
2) You can get TiVO, and HD-TiVO for it, we have TiVO
3) It really depends on how clear your view to the satelite is, it never did at my old apartment, but our new place since we are near an airport it often will go out for a few seconds during big storms.

1 -- Multiple boxes = multiple channels on mutiple TVs
2 -- It does come with DVR, it is not TiVO, it is a proprietary system designed in the UK. You cannot hack or expand the DirecTV DVR in the manner of TiVOs. The USB ports are non-functioning, no easy ability to sling the signal to PC or other media center.
This all means that their DVRs are exactly as neutered as Time-Warners or any other cable providers.
3 -- Important distinction here. The regular definition receivers are far less susceptible to signal loss during a storm. HD-receivers are more prone to signal loss.
If the game is on ABC however, you can overcome this issue with an OTA aerial that goes into the back of the DTV receiver.
Things on this front have definitely improved - and it takes a pretty intense storm to blank the signal. I suspect many cable users would also be suffering at those times.

What about internet - phone packages?

I am trying to figure out if I should switch (BTN, obviously) but I need to do as well as I'm doing now in terms of features... Which would include TV (with HDTV), Phone, Hi-speed net, DVR. I have seen links to packages for TV and Internet, but haven't seen anything about phone.

1. You can get up to 4 and they can all be independant from each other.

2. Yes it does...

3. Only during the biggest thunderstorms and only then for a minute or less....

I got something in the mail that combines verizon with DTV. I haven't looked at the deal very closely yet.

My signal goes out whenever it rains hard.

Worth your investment though. Go with the HD DVR instead of going with the standard one, more expensive but you'll be glad you did.

I've had DirecTV for several years now and have been happy so far. I just got the HD upgrade installed Friday, but with the older single antenna non-ND setup I had it would go out during heavy rain. Since I've only had the HD upgrade since Friday I haven't had the chance yet to see how it performs during rain storms.

The HD picture quality is killer, though. Once DirecTV finally gets all those HD channels (and BTN gets HD up), I'm going to be a happy mo-fo...

I think you're going to get a chance to see if the signal gets through the heavier rains this week....

You might have better luck with a 2 dish setup than the combined LNB dish. The key will be the signal strength - you likely know how to view that, but the more on eye you are the better that signal and the lower the risk of getting tossed.

Then again, in my experience the heavy storms were worse for HD than regular DirecTV - on an LNB dish. Hopefully that changes once DirecTV 10 lights up.

So apparently, although I live 20 miles from Binghamton/Elmira NY, the local channels I would get with DirectTV would be the ones from Scranton (60 miles away).....and there's no way they can give me the local channels from NY. That's completely ridiculous. I could hit a golf ball to the north of me, and it would land in someone's yard who is allowed to have the local channel's from NY, but I can't get them.

No DTV for me :(

If you're that close, just get an antenna for your local channels. When you want to watch the local news, sports programs, etc. Disconnect DTV and plug in your rabbit ears. Or you could keep one TV hooked up to the antenna all the time.

Antenna's aren't strong enough to get them all (I'm fairly certain).

Plus, I don't see the logic in unhooking something so something else works, when what I have now works just fine. It's too much hassle for 2 BTN games that we're going to kick the shit out of the opponent in anyways.

That's sucks man.

I know you are a Syracuse fan but I think 8 of the Buckeye's B'ball games will be on BTN as well.
