  • I am currently Time Warner Cable Customer and my wife for Christmas just upgraded us to HD, (bought a new TV and Blu-Ray) god bless her. She had no idea I was thinking of ditching the current cable supplier for a satellite provider. So for folks in the know, first question "should I ditch my cable for satellite?" Assuming that question is yes, should I go with Direct TV or the Dish Network?

    Thanks!!!

I haven't had cable in over 15 years primarily because I have been living in rural Wyoming and Colorado where cable wasn't available so I'll let someone who has had it compare it to Dish/Direct. I have had both Dish and Direct while in Wyo./Colo. and haven't seen much difference in price and/or channels offered overall. I switched to Direct because in the areas that I have lived Dish did not offer the BTN and Direct did. Bundling other services might be a concern as it can affect price overall of cable, internet, phone but I am sure you know that. I guess all I can say is I was happy with both of the satellite companies.

I've been watching Dish since about 07, and haven't really noticed any difference in the SD picture between the two. I can't speak about the HD quality comparison. However we have had the BTN ever since we switched to Dish, and I think we get a better channel selection at a similar or lesser price than we did with our cable provider (used to be Insight, but I believe they left our area and it is now MediaCom). However, if you're in a FiOS area (or close enough that FiOS will be coming before too long), I would highly suggest that looking into that.

It depends on bundles. If you get home phone (to go with your ham radio :p) and cable internet, it's often beneficial to pair it with cable.

If you're looking for the best lineup for HDTV & sports, DirecTV is the best by far.

I've got DishNetwork and I like it. Dish has the Versus network and that has some good sports on it. I would have bought DirectTV if I was going to get the NFL package, but I work on weekends so it's useless to me.

What are folks paying for satellite w/ HD? I understand the picture quality may be better, but I already had Time Warner and just got HD two weeks ago, and I already had ESPNU, Travel and AMC in HD. I'm happy with what I have and am not looking to switch, but I don't think I'd put up with a provider who didn't offer me all the channels I was looking for unless the price was prohibitive.

I rent my house, and it looks like the previous tenant had satellite service. I've briefly kicked around the idea of switching (or at least threatening to switch), but never got to far with that I idea because I'm pretty happy with what I have.

When people say DirecTV is better for sports programming, what exactly are you referring to? I know NFL Sunday Ticket is exclusive to them, but I'm really in no frame of mind to pay for a premium subscription to watch the Clowns get their teeth kicked in every Sunday. TimeWarner doesn't have NFL Network, but that doesn't really concern me. College football availability is king for me, and I get everything that's worthwhile and then some. I've noticed the only sports I don't have in HD at the moment that I get in SD are FCS East-Central-West (good for Big XII undercard and late-night Pac 10 games) and Fox Soccer Channel.

Dish Network in AZ, I get the VS. network which is good for hockey and some college football. DirectTV doesn't have VS. right now.

I do not get the B10 network, but could if I upgraded my package.

I pay about $65/mo for Dish and that gets me all the sports I need. I get about 25 or 30 HD channels I think? Maybe more, but I only watch about 10 of them so I could care less about the rest.

I pay 135/month for my DirecTV. That is the top package with HD and another receiver in the bedroom, including every single movie channel they offer(HBO, Showtime, etc.).

I do get the Ticket in the fall but you must add on the RedZone package or whatever it is called. Its the only way to get the games in HD. My bill sky rockets for those 4 months to about 300/month. I think it is awesome to have the tickets, I seriously do not move off the couch on Sundays.

In regards to other programming, I get all the fox sports channels (when they are not blacked out due to baseball games). This like jlb said allows me to see out of market Big12, CUSA, BigEast and Pac10 games. Also they do extra things for special sporting events. Take for example the Masters two weeks ago. I had 4 channels of Masters coverage on DirecTV...all in HD. They would have a feature group, amen corner, national feed, and another random channel. They do this for Tennis and they used to do it for MarchMadness but CBS but the stop to that this year. There is also the DirecTV sports MIX channel which has about 6-8 channels all up on your screen showing various sporting events.

I personally would never go back to cable again. I have had DirecTV for over 3 years now and am VERY satisfied with not only the television service but also customer service.

Forgot to add I get the BigTen network and the alternate channels. Sometimes they will have two games on at the same time, very nice feature.
