Dick Vitale (official thread)

I know "Dicky-V" turns alot of people off with his "over the top" approach, but the bottom line in that the guy loves college basketball. He may not be the sharpest tack on the bulletin board, , and I just take him for what he is. The guy has his dream job, and tries his best to bring to the viewer the same rush from the game that he gets himself. Peace.
I don't like him. I haven't liked him since way back when Jim Jackson was here. Vitale loved Boby Knight. He called him the general, and would talk about how great he is the whole game. One year we were playing Indiana there and fell behind by about 20 points just as MSU did tonight. Well that set dickie off. He talked about Knight all the way thru a 27-4(or there about) run. His partner suddenly said that hey the bucks have outscored Ind and are back in it. We won that game. Dickie still wouldn't shut up even as we won.
I got so tired of hearing about neitzel, Izzo' 4 champinships and MSU in the second half.
So Dickie may love BB but they can find someone who loves BB and is impartial as far as I am concerned.

While there are times when Vitale is less than objective, I did not witness it tonight. He was complimentary to the Bucks when deserved, and gave Sparty credit when it was due. That's pretty much the way the game went.

Never had a problem with what Dickie V says but he does talk a little too much. Kind of gives me a headache. I love his passion for the game though. He could get excited about a Woodcreek Community College vs. SE Louisiana St. A&M b-ball game.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about Dickie V. He's an entertainer, and a very good one at that. He is very good on coaches, and is never critical of anyone on the court. He's a very hyper fan who has the privledge of calling basketball games. So what if he has his favorites? Most announcers do.

Tonight's game was a bit different than normal (he actually gave good insight occasionally and wasn't obsessed with one team).

however frightfully rare, a tame dookie v. can actually be insightful. he's good for a few analytical nuggets per game, but he is otherwise annoying as sand up your crack.
It seems that he has become a caricature of his former self for ratings. I heard him call an NBA game on espn classic, and there was NONE of the annoying Dickie V 'ohhh ohhh' stuff. He would get excited but never over the top, and added a good amount of basketball insight.

His shouting is monotous... same tone, same words, almost every time. He's like a windup doll that has his cord released after every big play.
So what if he has his favorites? Most announcers do.
Sorry, I like announcers who realize there are two teams on the court. When Dookie V is calling his favorite team's game, the other team has to play lights out to receive any analysis or airtime.

Oh, I don't know Jwin, it's not like he didn't admit that Dook got a break the other night with the timing error at the end of the game :wink2: .... But, as Dookie V says, we still have to give credit to the Dookies for being able to make the play, bla, bla, bla.

WHO LET VITALE BACK IN THE HOUSE?

I thought after Vitale condemned Lawrence Funderburke on an open mike, calling him a criminal for the way he horsecollared a precious Indiana player that he was banned from appearing at an Ohio State home game?

Even when we have had the ESPiN game crew here, he has been noticeably absent? Apparently something has changed, and it appeared he was on his 'best behavior' last night.

For the record, he has carved out a pretty profitable career announcing the games as a 'tout' of college basketball. Like it or not, he has BECOME the color guy of college basketball (at least on ESPN). His quotables ('diaper dandy', 'aircraft carrier', etc) have become common slang (and I actually used 'diaper dandy' in a sentence last week!- the shame!).

Naw, I don't care for his false enthusiasm, his obvious leechlike tendencies (was Bobby Knight, trying for Duke coach) to sing their praises whether deserved or not. But he apparently does his homework on the players and the game and that actually is what we fans are looking for.....

:gobucks3: :gobucks4: :banger: I'm sure Jwin or someone else closer to Cbus and the inside action knows when he was 'allowed back in the house'. Probably the new AD Smith trying to 'make nice'.

Especially since that Ind guard said he faked it to draw the foul.
