It's absolutely mind-boggling to me to think about, on Saturday, it'll be the first time ever — first time ever — in March Madness. That's incredible. Think about the fact that it's happening in a year where Coach K — in his last rodeo, baby. How dramatic is this?

ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale cancer-free, rings bell to signify end of chemotherapy treatment



Vitale said in the fall he had been diagnosed with lymphoma, months after multiple surgeries to remove melanoma. He has chronicled his treatments and recovery on social media, posting photos of doctor visits and hospital stays while issuing motivational tips recorded before he was put on voice rest.

Dick Vitale reflects on cancer recovery as he prepares to return to the NCAA Tournament​


A year ago, Vitale had just finished a round of chemotherapy.

“Laying in the hospital after you do your chemo,'' Vitale said, "your family leaves, you’re laying there and thoughts go through your mind. You know, if you’re going to see another day. Never mind another basketball game.’’

ESPN analyst Dick Vitale says he has vocal cord cancer​

Longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale said Wednesday that he has vocal cord cancer and will need six weeks of radiation to treat it.

"I plan to fight like hell to be ready to call games when the college hoops season tips off in the Fall," Vitale wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.



The 84-year-old Hall of Famer said last month his "past issues on my vocal cords have returned" and that he would be on "on total voice rest for 6-8 weeks" while recovering from a July 11 procedure.

Vitale has been with ESPN since 1979, the year the network launched. He called ESPN's first college basketball broadcast.

Poor guy can’t catch a break.

Married about 50 years, wife, kids, grandkids, and has spent decades being paid to watch basketball games. He's caught his share of breaks.

No ill will toward him but he's 84 and has had a great life compared to a lot of people. We all die, sooner or later.
