Devon Still (official thread)

Still name co-lineman of the year in Delaware

http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061217/SPORTS14/612170360/1002/SPORTS

"Penn State has the lead now," Still said, citing the academic reputation of the school and "the style of football" installed by longtime coach Joe Paterno. But Still said he's also considering Ohio State because of its facilities and coaching staff, led by Jim Tressel, who since taking over the Buckeyes in 2001 has won one national championship and is one win away from another.

This academic reputation crap drives me nuts. PSU and OSU are about as identical academically as two schools can possibly be, but somehow PSU has managed to perpetuate itself as having this great "academic reputation" relative to OSU.

As for style of football, OSU is similar but typically better defensively, better on special teams, and more diverse offensively thanks to having coaches who actually know that a "quarterback" isn't just the "tails" side opposite George Washington's head.

I very rarely get worked up about losing recruiting battles (and am not conceding this one), but I hate when OSU suffers because of flat out wrong impressions.

Academic reputation and style of football... you gotta be kidding me

On scout.. some of the PSU guys are saying he's worried about our 32% grad rate for black athletes.. which is another misconception given those stats are outdated..

Devon should just give the real reason which is obviously he wants to stay close to home..

Guess he doesn't take into consideration when you go to the NFL as a junior and make millions, you just might not go back to school !!

What confuses me is... why do stats or "academic reputation" even matter... if YOU care about graduation, YOU do what is necessary to graduate... It's YOUR decision...

And just what "style" does our defense have that conflicts with what a DE would want?

I really really like this kid... which is why these comments really really bugged me

College is what you make it; if you WANT to graduate, you will do so as long as you work at it. Every school is going to have the resources to help even the most academically challenged kid succeed if he wants to.

The whole "OSU (or any other school) doesn't graduate black athletes is a load of BS if you ask me...

Tressel or whoever's recruiting him needs to set him straight if he truly thinks that.

Are PSU and their fans the biggest hypocrites ever? All I hear is them brag about their class yet I'd have to say their one of the worst fanbases I've seen(judging from message boards and stories about the '05 PSU-OSU game).

I wish there was some rule against negative recuiting because it needs to stop.

I've heard from several people that negative recruiting is a VERY large part of Johnson's recruiting style and that he comes VERY close to the line.

FWIW, Still think that Still is a Buckeye.
