Red Sox 12, Tigers 6

Tom Gage / The Detroit News

BOSTON -- The Tigers' season reverted to wrong numbers on Thursday night.

Failing to stretch one victory into two, they lost 12-6 to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, with former Tiger Sean Casey doing much of the damage with three RBI for the Sox. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 1-8.

But also with the loss, the bullpen looked as muddled as ever, what with Tigers giving up four runs in the seventh before answering with three of their own in the eighth, which they gave right back, and more, in Boston's four-run eighth.

Those two, the seventh and eighth, probably were the ugliest innings of a none-too-becoming season so far for the Tigers.

As for the first wrong number of the night, well, this time it had to do with the phone in Jim Leyland's office at Fenway Park instead of his cell phone.
It was on his cell phone, remember, that a mystery caller had suggested on Wednesday that he make Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera bunt if they came up with a runner on first.

"Who's this?" Leyland said into the phone, before being asked in turn who he is. "It's the manager of the Detroit Tigers."

Pause.

"That's O.K. I'll pass on the message."

Leyland then hung up the phone.

"It was John Henry's secretary calling the wrong number," he said, Henry being the Red Sox principal owner. "She thought she was calling the clubhouse guy."

Another pause.

"If we don't win a few more games," Leyland said. "I'm going to be the clubhouse guy."

At that point, the season became a laughing matter for one of the first times this year. Then the Tigers went out and lost again.

win 5-2. Clete Thomas and Inge are the best players on the team right now. Bullpen came up big, and Willis if he gets healthy may break the ML record for most walks given up in a season.

MacDougal was really stinking it up for the Chi Sox at the end there.
