Building Being Torn Down To Make Way For New Rec Center
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Demolition began Monday morning on Larkins Hall, which was Ohio State's student recreation center since it opened in 1931.
Nearly 1 million gallons of water remaining in the building's swimming pool was being pumped and sprayed on the demolition site, NBC 4 reported. For many students, Larkins represented a memorable part of their college years. The same was true for employees.
"That building's been here for 70 years," said Dave DeAngelo, who was the former manager of Larkins Hall. "It's been a big part of our lives for a long time. It's mixed emotions. On one hand it's sad, on the other hand, it's a great sign of progress. We're getting it out of the way to make way for the rest of our project so we're excited."
Larkins is being removed to make way for Phase two of OSU's new recreation center, which will include basketball and squash courts, a golf driving range and putting green.
The entire project is costing the university $140 million.

In 1976, the Board of Trustees named the recreational facility after Larkins, who had retired in 1970 after 24 years as athletics director. Larkins died April 5, 1977, at the age of 67.
