Demolition Begins On Larkins Hall

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Building Being Torn Down To Make Way For New Rec Center

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Demolition began Monday morning on Larkins Hall, which was Ohio State's student recreation center since it opened in 1931.

Nearly 1 million gallons of water remaining in the building's swimming pool was being pumped and sprayed on the demolition site, NBC 4 reported. For many students, Larkins represented a memorable part of their college years. The same was true for employees.

"That building's been here for 70 years," said Dave DeAngelo, who was the former manager of Larkins Hall. "It's been a big part of our lives for a long time. It's mixed emotions. On one hand it's sad, on the other hand, it's a great sign of progress. We're getting it out of the way to make way for the rest of our project so we're excited."

Larkins is being removed to make way for Phase two of OSU's new recreation center, which will include basketball and squash courts, a golf driving range and putting green.

The entire project is costing the university $140 million.

In 1976, the Board of Trustees named the recreational facility after Larkins, who had retired in 1970 after 24 years as athletics director. Larkins died April 5, 1977, at the age of 67.

It's about time...I'm damn sick of paying the new activity fee and not having my new Larkins to use. Lots of memories in the old one but most of them bad as it was hot as hell in there, the weights were broken, and it smelled like ass everywhere!

Too bad we wont get to use this newest part.
It would however be nice if the finished part of the RPAC would open :mad2:

I checked out the new Larkins yesterday, now the weight room looks awesome. 3 stories of weights, machines, bikes, cardio, etc. overlooking a huge glass wall SE of the stadium. If it wasn't so expensive I might consider joining.

Wow. This is cool.

I remember how retro the weight room was at Larkins compared to those at the small schools in Ohio. Ahh, the days of racquetball. Now it costs over $100 a month just to be able to play somewhere.

The students deserve a better facility. Good Stuff.

Any word on the completion date for the new facility?

Misanthrope: "The campus I knew keeps getting torn down."

The campus we all knew was oficially gone once Campus Partners had Papa Joe's incinerated (I was across the street at the time), and then systematically ran all the South Campus High Street bars out of business.

I was out running on Saturday and saw that they removed the chainlink gate and had finished pouring a sidewalk that goes from the SE stadium corner up to the glass wall of the weight room. You could actually walk all the way around back, but not much to see on the west side. Did have some nice speakers hanging outside the building, maybe they'll pipe muzak through to the tennis courts and fields.

Anyways, you could walk right up to the glass window and look inside. Maybe I'll head over there tonight and take a picture. The ground floor is mostly weights it looks like, the 2nd floor has some bikes overlooking the first floor out towards the stadium, then way high up there's another balcony of treadmills that looks down on it all. Couldn't tell where the new track will be, but it's supposed to be a 1/6 mile track.

Sounds sweet, now they just need to open it!!

On the one hand I'll miss Larkins after going there almost every day for the past 4 years. On the other hand the RPAC looks amazing. Somehow we managed to build something next to the shoe that isn't dwarfed by comparison. It's also a lot more sightly than Larkins and will probably smell better. This whole situation is probably different for me because I still have a chance to make some memories at the new facilities.
Good news for people like Golferdow and I. Apparently the university is refunding the $30 tack-on they charged for the summer quarter activity fee since they haven't opened it yet. Sweet.

Couldn't they have found someone to comment on the demolition who isn't a complete fucktool?
