Deion Sanders (HC Colorado)

Deion Sanders challenges reporter on Colorado transfer portal losses: 'Quit making a big deal out of nothing'

"I wish you guys did a little more homework when you start talking about the portal and understand what we're losing," Sanders said. "What are we losing? I got time today. What are we losing?"

"You haven't been watching practice, huh?" Sanders said. "We're good. We're good. I trust our recruiting team. I trust our coaches. But please have some faith in me. We're good. We're alright. We're alright. What happens with the portal, man, and you guys need to know — a lot of people are fighting for backups. When a guy is a starter and he transfers, you gotta really think about that. I mean, is he really that?

"I don't know how many starters have really transferred around the country. I think we've got some coming in for visits pretty soon, maybe even this weekend. But we can attract those type of players, but I don't think we're losing those type of players. And if we do, we're good. We're good. Quit making a big deal out of nothing."

Losing 86 players to the transfer portal in the span of two offseasons would sound major alarms at any other program, but it is the norm at Colorado, which utilized college football's quasi-free agency model to a greater extent than every FBS program since Sanders ascended to the helm in Dec. 2022.

Deion Sanders: It was 'stupid' for daughter Shelomi leave Colorado for transfer portal

Coach Prime was definitely not on board with his daughter's decision.

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders said it's "stupid" that his daughter, Shelomi Sanders, entered the transfer portal and left the Buffaloes' women's basketball team earlier this month. Sanders admitted that he wished his daughter had a destination in mind before entering the portal, though that's technically against NCAA rules.

"It was stupid," Sanders said of Shelomi's decision to enter the portal, via DNVR Sports. "You get a team before you enter the portal. That's what I would advise a kid. I know, 'Well, it's illegal.' C'mon, man. Everybody knows somebody that knows somebody that knows somebody. You kind of want them to do something, and she has been truly advised."

Sanders denied that Shelomi's transfer would lead him to leave Colorado, reminding the interviewers that his daughter initially signed with Jackson State out of high school before following him out West ahead of the 2022-23 season.

"You've got to understand I'm a real father," Sanders said. "Where I come from, historically, kids follow their parents. When did parents start following the kids? That doesn't work in my book. That doesn't work where I am from. I am the leader of the family. So, I've been dictating where my kids go. They're not dictating where I go. I'm happy. I'm cool. I'm sound in Boulder. I love it 100%. We're going to build a monument. You see those mountains over the stadium? I want my head on one of them."
