Defensive tips for 2008?

the_woodster

man about town
Does anyone have any defensive tips for NCAA 2008, preferably for 360? I have seen hot routes for the xbox called smart zones that position the defenders at the first down line and not over or under as some zone schemes would have them. I do not see this option under the 360, however I do see defensive hot routes. Do these hot routes only pertain to the player selected, or the entire defense (I am guessing single player).

One of the easiest tips that I have come up with is if the offense is running a play that starts with a man in motion, it is easy to jump the snap as you can wait until just before he gets to his position and press LT. Anyone else got any?

Well, really the only way to have a top-notch defense is to play as a DB. I do that, and playing as Coleman and Russell at the safety positions my whole defense really came alive and I am currently averaging to give up less than 140 yards a game on Heisman.

I've never played as a DB - I've had better results playing as a DT.

This year's version seems to reward blitzing moreso than past versions. In the past, I'd have to rely on my line to create pressure (hence playing as a DT) because the computer really took advantage of holes created by blitzes or single coverage with no deep safeties. In '08 it seems that blitzing defenders get into the backfield MUCH faster than before, making it harder for anybody to take advantage of the vulnerabilities created by the blitz.

I have PS2 - so my input may not help. I always play as the MLB, and in zone. I rarely blitz with the MLB, but often with a nickle back or OLBs. Some games, I can get 2-3 interceptions. I don't know what it is, but the quarterback often throws right to me. One game, Laurinaitis got 6 interceptions, and then 4 the next game. He ended with something like 14 for the season (a lot of games the quarterback knows I'm on defense). But then he went pro. Austin Spitler (isn't he #38?) has maybe 5 or so in 7 or 8 games this season.

That is how I play defense too. I am the MLB and I let my OLB's blitz. I either stuff the run or fall back into my zone defense.

But the problem I am running into with the next gen game is the CPU QB's pick apart zone defenses left and right. The best defense is the Cover 2 man, but then me playing the MLB gets exploited due to me not covering the TEs or RBs out from the backfield fast enough. Still working on it though but it is a learning process.

I can cover a player well enough, usually, when he stays on the screen. I might not get to the ball, but the receiver isn't getting a first down. And since the only time I play man-to-man is on third and long, or near the end of the half, a short completion isn't a bad thing. But what bothers me is that if I'm covering a running back who runs out into the flat, I'm screwed. I can't see where he is - I can't cover him.

Exactly! Of course I don't have a HD TV yet but you would hope that eventually the game will come in HD and stretch the field so you can see sideline to sideline.

And of course I am too lazy to change the camera angle

Play Legend mode, pick an offensive player and you won't have to worry about defense at all  Alternatively, if your defense is crappy, you better hope you score TDs each possession.
As far as defense on the PS3 08, I haven't found anything too concrete yet. I've always preferred playing D-line, usually an End so I can contain at least one side of the QB and rush. Unfortunately I'm not an interception wizard with DBs, I prefer to play it safe and bat the ball away when I can. I'll only go for the INT when the CPU or human player throws into double coverage. Currently, my D-line isn't that spectacular, my linebackers and safeties are the stars of my 3-4 defense. The way I see it, if I can step up the play of the crappy D-line, the computer controlled LBs and Safeties can pull the rest.

I switched the camera angle. I think it's called "Classic." The default is too close for me. Classic is a little bit farther away. But the running back still runs off the screen.

Another issue I have with man-to-man coverage, is you press whatever.. R2, I think, and it says you cover this guy. Let's say you're covering the fullback. One OLB is to cover the TE, and the other is to cover the halfback. The play starts, and the guy who was supposed to cover the halfback is covering the fullback, and the halfback is wide open. Like, "DUDE!!! Cover the guy you were supposed to cover!"

I'm not about to dish out $100,000 for a PS3 or XBox live. I've still got a PS2. I haven't tried much of Campus Legend mode, but I think it's pretty much the same as it was in previous years. If you make an offensive player, you're playing the defense, too.

Na man, under Campus Legend you only play the player you chose. The best part is you can use the new game simulator to skip viewing any plays your player isn't on the field. So, if you score a TD with your offensive player, you can sim the defense and special teams until you get your next possession. If you're not 1st string yet with your player, it will even sim the offensive plays you're not in so you don't have to wait around.
