Just sayin': Sure seems to me like there is a lot more than usual. They all won't be 1st rounders, or even picked at all, or even make a team as a free agent. After the the final cuts for the 2014 NFL season there is going to be a lot disappointed players from the above list.

also see for some commentary (like below): http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...g-underclassmen-intentions-for-2014-nfl-draft

Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State

Jan. 9: Miller returning for senior season
Miller will return for his senior season with the Buckeyes, the school confirmed. Miller had 3,162 yards of total offense and accounted for 36 touchdowns this season in helping the Buckeyes to a 12-2 record. He threw for 2,094 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and added 1,068 yards and 12 TDs on the ground despite missing two games and most of a third with a knee injury.

It's currently over 100 players who have currently declared and the old record was 73 I believe, can't remember where I saw that today.

1/15 is the deadline to declare but 1/18 is the deadline to withdraw, will be very interesting.

Some teams are really taking a big hit here (4 or more).

Teams - # players

Alabama - 4
California - 4
Florida - 4
LSU - 6
Notre Dame - 4
South Carolina - 4
USC - 5

Although sometimes it is not how many you lose, but who you lose that really effects a team the next year, ex. needless to say guys like Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Football, etc. will be (almost) impossible to replace with someone of equal ability/production.

I'm curious how the draft grading process works; do they measure the talent in a vacuum and say "you are a second round talent" based off just the player skill set? Or do they take into consideration the likely needs of the teams?

I assume the latter is true, but with the number of early departures, I'm wondering if their is some bad advice being thrown out there? I'm sure there are more than a few players that believe they will make an impact at the combine and wow a few execs and then more that are okay getting drafted in the 7th round and just moving on with their life.

Sheesh--Cal was 1-11 this year, and they have 4 guys going pro early? 2014 is going to be brutal.

I found this:

With a day remaining before the Jan. 15 deadline ends, a record 91 underclassmen have declared for the 2014 NFL Draft. Last year, there were 73 who left school with eligibility remaining. The two previous classes were 65 and 56. Last year, of the 73 who declared early, 21 went undrafted.

Surprised by this.

Yeah, it was a bit surprising for a lot of fans, but the writing was kind of on the wall for GA III
The guy started out as #1 on the RB depth chart at the beginning of the season, however he saw fewer and fewer carries as the year went on. He's one of the bigger backs in the backfield at 220, but he doesn't use his size to his advantage. He typically goes down at first contact, doesn't do a great job of leaning forward or getting extra years, he runs almost straight up instead of keeping his pads low. He's not great at finding the hole, doesn't run well between the tackles. What does he do well? Straight line speed basically, using his track background. He's a home run threat, if he gets into open space, he can take it to the house. He also did well in KR, averaging 25 yards per return with 780 total yards.

I think the thought process here is that GAIII will most likely continue to give up carries to FR Tarean Folston, Cam McDaniel, and if he's healthy Greg Bryant next season. It's unlikely that's going to help him with his draft status. He'll probably get a look at the combine from some teams because of his speed (At least thats what reports are saying). It's very possible he'll go undrafted though, or if he is picked it will be late for Special Teams.

I do know that his dad, George Atkinson II, was not happy with his son losing carries over the course of the season. He took to Twitter a few times to express his feelings on that. GA III also got busted for breaking rules at a team meal before the bowl game, he ended up getting suspended for the game. He also voiced his displeasure about the punishment on Twitter, but quickly removed the Tweet. I'm sure some of that helped push GA III to try his luck with the draft.
