I agree that his legacy has been tarnished but even more that he was a straight up guy his whole life except for this instance.
The teachings he gave for years and years cannot be taken away.
It wasn't one incident ..he could've stopped Jerry any day after McQueary told him about the shower incident..but no everyday Joe CHOSE to let Jerry skate even allowing him to have keys to facillities, tickets to bowls etc. He made thousands of mistakes not one.

It seems pretty far-fetched that he didn't have prior knowledge of Sandusky's "tendencies" before McQ informed him of the shower stuff. Given some of the timelines that are out there, and Sandusky's sudden "retirement" 2 years prior, sure sounds like there was. If he did have prior knowledge to the 2002 incident, and still only did the bare minimum to meet his legal requirements, that is some pretty morally bankrupt [Mark May]. The whole thing stinks. Knowing what he knew, and the fact that Sandusky was still allowed to hang around the friggin' campus for years, not to mention continue to operate a "charity" for young boys, is disturbing. Him saying "I wish I'd done more" after being busted in very public fashion does not absolve him of culpability.

Once again, it's clear he did a lot of good for the university, loved the university, and played a big part in the development of a lot of men...but, the information that's out there sure does paint him as a man that was pretty morally "flexible" when it came to protecting the image of his program and his all important legacy. I feel for his family, and those that he was close to, but don't try to paint him as some damn saint when it's clear he was not.

Oh he most certainly had knowledge of it before McQ came to him about the shower scene. There was a janitor who witnessed something similar in the mid 90's, and then there was the investigation and stake out soon thereafter. Joe ran crappy valley, no matter what the pedsters say. He knew everything that went down in that backwoods little shithole. Why else do you think Jerry the pedophile suddenly "retired" and joe had not much good, let alone anything, to say about his good buddy and colleague at his retirement function? Joe is a piece of shit enabler that allowed Jerry to systematically destroy young boys lives.

Just to be accurate on the timeline:

The first known investigation was in 1998, based on a mother hearing something from her son about him being uncomfortable with what was non-sexual contact in a shower. That's when Sandusky said "I wish I were dead" with the cops listening in the next room at the mother's house. The local DA that decided not to bring charges after that investigation is the guy who disappeared in 2005 and was declared legally dead last year (Ray Gricar).

Sandusky "retired" in May of 1999, after JoePa told him he wouldn't be JoePa's successor as PSU.

The incident where the janitor (Jim Calhoun) was said to have witnessed Sandusky "performing oral sex"/"licking" a boy occurred in 2000, but it was mentioned to his supervisor and not officially reported (the supervisor, Jay Witherite, told him he how he could report it, but he didn't do so), according to the grand jury presentment. Another janitorial staff member confirmed that Sandusky was in the shower with a boy that evening, but didn't witness any criminal behavior. I haven't seen anything that says that Paterno heard about that incident, so it would seemingly be speculation either way. Calhoun is a Korean War veteran who now has Alzheimer's and is unable to testify.

The incident described by McQueary occurred in early March, 2002.

My apologies. I thought I had read that the janitor incident prompted the investigation. Anyway, my point stands. Joe knew what was going on under his nose before McQ came to him in 2002. Speculation? Yes. But based on how that podunk town is all about JoePa, I find it very, very hard to believe he was totally oblivious to the situation, especially the way he acted towards Sandusky leading up to his 1999 retirement.
