NO. 7 DE WILL SMITH

Year 9, Age 31. Ht. 6-3, Wt. 282.

SAINTS COLUMNIST MIKE TRIPLETT'S TAKE:

Smith is no longer in his prime as a pass rusher, but he remains the most disruptive player in a front seven that needs more guys like him. He should have at least one more impact season left in him, especially under the tutelage of new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who has a great track record with defensive linemen. Smith will be missed if he has to serve his four-game bounty suspension to start the season - though a legal battle could potentially keep him on the field.

Though a bit more stout than some of the NFL's top pass rushers, Smith still has a good deal of athleticism to go with his standout power. And he does a good job of keeping offensive tackles guessing. Spagnuolo has tinkered with moving Smith to defensive tackle in some formations this summer, further expanding on that versatility.

Smith had 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles last season after returning from a two-game suspension to start the season. He now has 61.5 sacks in a standout eight-year career with the Saints that led to a Pro Bowl selection in 2006 and could have led to another in 2009.

SAINTS OT JERMON BUSHROD'S TAKE:

"He's got good speed and good power. With all that, he's got good leverage, so that makes his speed that much more tough to defend and his power that much tougher to stop because he has the ability to play low. He's uses his hands well too, so he's good against the run. You could say he's an all-around d-end. Some guys specialize in the run, some guys specialize in the pass and he does a good job at both."

Will Smith: New Orleans Saints' 'bounty' punishment not fair

NFL.com Wire Reports
Published: Aug. 2, 2012

New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, who has said little about his impending four-game suspension in connection with the team's "bounty" program, said Thursday that he doesn't believe the NFL's investigation or punishment was meted out appropriately.

"Obviously I don't think it's fair," Smith said after practice. "Obviously I think the commissioner made a mistake."

The coaches of the NFL weigh in on a number of hot-button topics in the league, including Andrew Luck vs. RG3, Tim Tebow, challenge flag etiquette, the Packers' QB tree and the 2012 Hall of Fame class.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended four players for their roles in the program that paid defensive players cash bonuses to injure opponents.

The NFL Players Association has sued the NFL on behalf of Smith and two other suspended players to have their bans overturned, arguing that Goodell cannot be impartial by handing down suspensions while also hearing the players' appeals.

The NFL says Goodell followed the process agreed to in the collective bargaining agreement.

"Ultimately, (Goodell) made the call and it's in the court system," Smith said. "We'll see what happens. If I've got to serve the four games, I'll serve the four games. When I come back, I'll be 100 percent ready to go and lead my team."

Suspended Will Smith sacks Tom Brady in Saints' loss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Will Smith is getting ready for the season as if he wasn't facing suspension for the first four games.

He's still getting sacks.

The fourth-leading sacker in New Orleans history crunched Tom Brady from behind, forcing a fumble in the first quarter of the New England Patriots' 7-6 exhibition win over the Saints on Thursday night.

"No," Smith said when asked if he's preparing any differently than if he had avoided punishment in his team's bounty scandal. "Preseason's the same. Got to work hard. Job's always on the line, so got to go out and compete."

Once the regular season starts, interim coach Joe Vitt said, Smith, with 61 1-2 sacks in eight seasons, will be missed.

"You're going to miss anybody with the talent of Will Smith," said Vitt, who faces his own suspension for the first six regular-season games. "Will's a heck of a player. He's a heck of a leader."

New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith's impressive preseason makes bounty suspension even harder to swallow

Don't mistake Will Smith's low-key response to the NFL's bounty allegations as any sort of acceptance.

New Orleans Saints defensive ends Will Smith (91) and Cameron Jordan (94) sack New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12), causing him to fumble during the preseason game between the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on August 9

Of course the New Orleans Saints defensive end is angry. Of course he feels he and his suspended teammates and coaches were wronged. And even though linebacker Jonathan Vilma has been the most aggressive defender in the courtroom, Smith is still optimistic that he can earn some legal victories as well, including a possible injunction to delay his looming four-game suspension.

Smith has simply decided that it won't do him any good to keep complaining about his situation and "keep all the nonsense going on."

"I don't want people to think that I'm not mad about it or disappointed. I am disappointed, and I'm frustrated about the events that took place and me being wrongfully accused of everything," said Smith, who drew a four-game suspension because, according to the league, he "assisted defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in establishing and funding" the team's pay-for-performance/bounty program in his role as a defensive captain and leader.

"The evidence is out there for people to make their own determination," Smith continued. "And the overwhelming support from other players around the league who know who I am as a person and know what type of player I am know all that stuff is nonsense. And then the only person that really matters is what the commissioner thinks is nonsense. But I just essentially have to not pay attention to it. I mean, he suspended all of us, and we took our pills and our approach and we just have to go from there."

NFLPA files motion to stop bounty related suspensions for Will Smith, Scott Fujita, Anthony Hargrove
Larry Holder, The Times-Picayune

The NFLPA filed a motion in U.S. District Court in New Orleans on Tuesday night seeking a temporary restraining order to stop the alleged bounty scandal suspensions for New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith and former Saints defenders Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove. The regular season begins this week.

The players' union also requested an expedited hearing before a previously scheduled Sept. 26 hearing in front of Judge Helen Berrigan. All three argued in the latest filing that the "smear campaign" launched by the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell against them will irreparably harm their reputations.

The Saints are planning to play the next four games without Smith, who also missed the first two games last season and was docked two additional game checks after testing positive in 2008 for a banned substance that was found in StarCaps, a dietary supplement.

Fujita is slated to miss the first three games on this season for the Cleveland Browns. Hargrove is a free agent after being released by Green Bay in the preseason.

Smith and Fujita argued in the latest filing that each are starters and that the suspension could cost them their jobs, "or even worse," their places on their teams' rosters.

Saints DE Will Smith will play Sunday if suspension is lifted

By Guerry Smith | CBSSports.com
September 5, 2012

Saints interim coach Aaron Kromer said DE Will Smith will play Sunday against Washington if he receives a temporary restraining order in federal court lifting his bounty-related suspension.

Smith, represented by the NFL Players Association, is suspended for the first four games. He and practiced with the team in the preseason before his suspension started this week. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that U.S. district judge Ginger Berrigan ordered the NFL to file a response no later than Thursday to the NFLPA's request for a temporary restraining order for Smith and former Saints Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove, who also received bounty-related suspensions.

Berrigan wrote that she was ?extremely disappointed? no settlement between the NFLPA and the NFL had been reached because it likely would have resulted in a reduction of the suspensions, indicating she thought their penalties were too harsh.

Saints LB Jonathan Vilma, who is suspended for the entire season, hired a private attorney and sought a temporary restraining order in July in the same federal court. Vilma is not involved in the current matter, but a favorable ruling for Smith could help Vilma reach a settlement, too.

Berrigan did not indicate Wednesday when she would rule on the request for a temporary restraining order.

Vilma's suspension started in May, so he has not practiced with the Saints under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He also had a knee injury that could sideline him for the start of the year if he becomes eligible.

?Those are two individual situations,? Kromer said when asked what would happen if Smith and Vilma had their suspensions lifted before Sunday. ?Will Smith has been practicing all along until this week, so he would be ready, and [with] Vilma we'd just have to judge what kind of shape and what kind of knowledge he has.?

Player suspensions from bounty case vacated
Posted Sept. 07, 2012
By PFW staff

A three-member appeals panel vacated the suspensions of the players allegedly involved in the Saints' bounty scandal, Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated first reported.

The case has been remanded back to commissioner Roger Goodell to redetermine penalties if there is evidence of an ?intent to injure.? Goodell only has the jurisdiction to punish the players if the ?intent to injure? can be proved, according to Gabe Feldman of NFL Network.

The players affected are Saints LB Jonathan Vilma (suspended one year), Saints DE Will Smith (three games), Browns LB Scott Fujita (four games) and free-agent DE Anthony Hargrove (eight games). Vilma likely would not be available to play Sunday because of a knee injury, but Smith and Fujita are expected to play.

The NFL released the following response to the decision, per Albert Breer of NFL Network: "Consistent with the panel's decision, Commissioner Goodell will, as directed, make an expedited determination of the discipline imposed for violating the NFL's pay-for-performance/bounty rule. Until that determination is made, the four players are reinstated and eligible to play starting this weekend."

New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith unsure how Roger Goodell will rule
09/21/12
Nakia Hogan, The Times-Picayune

Will Smith admittedly doesn't know what's going to happen next. The New Orleans Saints defensive end who was suspended four games for his role in the Saints' bounty scandal only to have his suspension lifted by a three-member appeals panel on the eve of the NFL season said Friday that his meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell in New York on Tuesday went well.

But Smith, who left his meeting with Goodell without talking to reporters, was given no indication what's to come next.

"The meeting overall went well," Smith said. "I got a chance to go in there and tell him what happened in the meeting room. And we have to see what happens."

Smith also was unsure how Goodell would rule following their meeting.

"I don't know," Smith said. "At the end of the day, it comes down to the commissioner. At the end of the day I can't judge or gauge his level of what he is going to discipline or if he is going to discipline at all."

Smith did admit that the constant back and forth during the bounty scandal and subsequent ruling has been a bit taxing.

But Smith, who has 11 tackles in the first two weeks, said he has made dealing with the suspension and appeals a priority.

"It's tough being a professional athlete period," Smith said. "It's something that I know I have to do. It's important. Without that and taking care of that a lot of stuff really doesn't matter. I have to prioritize, and obviously that comes first."

Will Smith complains about ?arrogance and agenda? of NFL investigators
Posted by Mike Florio on October 9, 2012

Will Smith AP

Of the four players who received renewed discipline for their involvement in the Saints? alleged bounty program, only Saints defensive end Will Smith had no changes made to his penalty.

He initially was suspended four games, and he once again has been suspended four games. Understandably, he?s not happy about it.

?I remain frustrated with the continued unilateral rulings by this commissioner as he continues to disregard the facts and assault my character,? Smith said in a statement released to PFT. ?Let me be clear? I never participated in a ?pay-to-injure program,? never took the field with intent to injure another player, and never contributed any money to hurt other players. It was my hope that those investigating would put their arrogance and agenda aside in order to comprehend the difference between a ?pay-for-performance program? and a ?pay-to-injure program,? but until that day, I will continue to pursue my appeal options through the NFLPA, and attempt to return to work for my family, teammates, fans and the city of New Orleans.?

Smith has the right to appeal the ruling of Commissioner Roger Goodell, to Commissioner Roger Goodell. If the appeal is affirmed, Smith likely will once again pursue a court order overturning the suspension.

Utica's Smith helping Saints turn it around
By RON MOSHIER

Utica?s Will Smith was a force again and not coincidentally, his New Orleans Saints are on the verge of being NFL relevant again after beating up quarterback Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles 28-13 on Monday Night Football.

Smith had two of the Saints? seven sacks, doubling his season total, and harassed Vick on several other occasions to help New Orleans ? once 0-4 and seemingly out of the playoff picture ? improve to 3-5.

Smith, a nine-year veteran whose 65.5 career sacks rank him fourth among the Saints? all-time leaders, felt the whole defense played with more intensity.

?I think so,? Smith said. ?The sense of urgency is high. We?re climbing up a mountain and we?ve got to keep fighting. We know we didn?t play well last week (in a 34-14 Sunday night loss in Denver), so we wanted to come out and have a better performance.?

Smith had just two sacks ? none in the previous two games ? and the Saints had only 13 as a team before getting to Vick seven times Monday night.

?We think we had a good pass rush on the defensive line,? said Smith, the former Thomas R. Proctor High School and Ohio State University star. ?The problem is we never got into a situation the last couple of weeks to really rush the passer. We gave up a lot of yards rushing and teams were able to control us.?

Not so Monday night. Not by the Eagles much-maligned offensive line.

Through eight games, Smith has 31 tackles and is tied for second on the team with four sacks. And at 1 p.m. this Sunday, he and the Saints host Atlanta, hoping to put the heat on Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and knock off the only unbeaten team in the NFL.

New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith has no issue with Paul Tagliabue's appeals timeline
11/21/12
Larry Holder, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith said he has no problem with the timeline established by former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue in the bounty appeals as the series of hearings are to be held Nov. 27 through Dec. 4 in Washington D.C.

The Associated Press reported Tagliabue wants the NFL to produce two of the NFL's most prominent whistleblowers in the bounty scandal investigation as Tagliabue wants former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and former defensive assistant Mike Cerullo to testify.

Smith said having Williams and others testify is the most vital aspect of the entire Tagliabue appeals process.

"It's going to be important that Gregg and those guys get a chance to get cross-examined as we were cross-examined," Smith said. "It's good to have those guys finally stepping forward and actually talking instead of hiding."

Smith added later on in an interview Wednesday, "The most important thing is that Gregg Williams and those other guys are going to have to testify and be cross-examined. I think that's the most important thing and see if their stories stay the same."

Smith (four games), Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma (season), Browns linebacker Scott Fujita (one game) and free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove (seven games) have not served any of their suspensions. The original punishments were vacated just before the Saints' Week 1 game against Washington. The league issued new sanctions against the four players Oct. 10, but the players have been free to play since they appealed the newer sanctions.

The AP also reported Tagliabue will make a decision shortly after the hearings wrap up Dec. 4. Smith said he has no issue with the appeals being decided during the season even though an upheld suspension could mean Smith and Vilma missing games with the Saints fighting for the playoffs.

"He's (Tagliabue) got to make a decision eventually," Smith said. "I know everyone wants a fast decision, so after everything is heard and the hearing has taken place and we're caught up to speed with everything, we'll see what happens. ... You try not to think about it. My job is to play football and to help the New Orleans Saints win games and play at a high level. If it means dealing with that as a distraction, I've got to put it on the back burner while I'm playing. Whatever happens, happens."

A motion in U.S. District Court filed by the players to recuse Tagliabue as the lead officer in the Saints appeals process is still in play as there's been no decision yet by Judge Helen Berrigan.

New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith mum on his feelings of how bounty appeals hearings fared
By Larry Holder, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune
on December 05, 2012

New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith doesn't want any part of forecasting how encouraging or discouraging the bounty appeals hearings conducted by former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue fared with the case now in Tagliabue's hands. Smith did say Wednesday that facing his accusers like former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams did at least produce an aspect of the case that would have never been allowed had the players not fought back.

"I've said from Day 1 that it's good to have this process to be able to cross examine these people who said these things that didn't take place and to have the (NFL)PA be able to interview these guys and all this other stuff, and we think this is a fair process," Smith said. "Well, fair in the sense that there was a hearing of some sort. The fact that we were able to sit in and listen to these people get cross examined was interesting and needed."
Will Smith flushes Matt Ryan from pocket New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith (91) will likely be available to play Sunday in New York. Michael DeMocker, NOLA.com and the Times-Picayune

Smith said he wanted to attend Monday's practice after having the weekend off rather than attend the hearings in New Orleans. Smith said he didn't have to testify and he received a copy of all of the transcripts so he didn't feel like it was "out of the box" to miss Monday's proceedings.

Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma did attend Friday's hearings in Washington D.C. to listen to Williams' testimony. Vilma, interim coach Joe Vitt and former Vikings coach and current Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress testified Monday.
