Re: This week the Renegades will welcome new linebacker Walter Dublin. Dublin played college football for Ohio State and said he has been working out with the Georgia Force and plans to join that team next season.

He sure didn't play very much college football for Ohio State. I don't believe that he was on the team in 2007; and didn't he sit out all of 2006 due to an injuiry and/or red shirt? :(

:eek:I found a video online of him playing arena ball... he plays what you call a mack linebacker in the AFL still looks to have that quickness we used to read about from high school. hes definitely gotten bigger. wish he would have stuck around for a while longer....

Have any of you heard about him recently?

As a lifetime Buckeye fan and close friend of Walter Dublin's agent, I was excited to hear the other day that Walter is in the process of getting a deal worked out with the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League... Although we are all dissapointed that his career at tOSU was cut short due to a series of personal and academic mishaps, its always good to see that a player is able to bounce back and become successful on another level of play.

The thing that struck me as interesting is the fact that he JUST turned 20yrs old... According to Preston(his agent) in the 4 games he played with the Lubbock Renegades of the AF2 he was extremely productive turning in 7 sacks and nearly double in tackles for loss. To this day, I can only dream of how he would have developed with 4 more years under Heacocks tutalage.

At a private workout last month, he came in at 6'2'' 250lbs and ran a 4.62s forty yard dash. He plays what the AFL calls a "Mack Linebacker" which is primarily a stand-up pass rusher.

Walter Dublin was bound to become the favorite player for many Iowa Barnstormers fans.


As of today, Dublin signed a three year contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.


We all know that this is a business, so I can?t blame him for taking the job up there. He will be making a considerably larger salary up there.


Walter, even though you haven?t met any of us, we?d all like to wish you the best of luck in your ventures.

Walter Dublin wasn?t at the Senior Bowl or indeed at any of the All Star games, but he?s a player that Miami have been checking out. Dublin was signed with Ohio State in 2006, but dropped out due to familial issues. He then played some with the Lubbock Renegades in Arena League 2 before signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. At around 6?2, 252 and with a reported forty time of 4.62, his name bears watching. A ?mack? linebacker in the Arena League, he was a stand up rush linebacker.

Big Cat Country: What has the extent of your contact with the Jacksonville Jaguars been?

Walter Dublin: Our contact as of now has been limited to a few phone calls, text messages & emails back and forth? Everything has been positive but given my situation, its been much more difficult than usual for teams to evaluate me as a prospect.

BCC: Who from the Jaguars has contacted you? Gene Smith or Jack Del Rio?

WD: my contact as of now has been limited to the Scouts. I have been in communication with Jason DesJarlais.


BCC: What do you currently weigh and what is the last 40 yard dash time you ran?

WD: I am currently 6?2 273lbs I just held my Pro Day a few days ago and it will be posted virally in the coming days. I ran in the 4.8 range with a 1.62s 10yd split, 34" vertical jump, 9?4" broad jump, in the 4.4s range on my short shuttle, officially 24 reps on bench. The Official number will be up as soon as they are available.

BCC: Where did you have your pro-day and how many teams were represented?

WD: Due to my circumstances and the fact that I hadn?t been enrolled in school for quite some time, the NFL did not permit me to have any teams present at my Pro Day. It was held at Northwestern University in the same environment in which they held theirs. It was filmed by the same film crew that was required to film theirs and was under the direction of a former NFL scout. Over 11 teams have requested the workout footage, but it will be sent to every team scout in my region just as a general reference. A lot of people still have no clue who I am.

BCC: Why did the NFL prohibit teams from attending?

WD: My agent would have more information on that than myself but it had to do with residency issues. There was a conflict between where I lived and where I would be permitted to workout for scouts. It hasnt had any negative effect on team interest though. The teams still continue to call in inquiry.

BCC: What NFL player do you think is closest to your skill set?

WD: well growing up I always compared myself to the great Dwight Freeney, but I would say my game mimics Lamar Woodley more closely now. I am very quick and physical at the point of attack. I love contact and pride myself on stunning offensive lineman.

BCC: What is the biggest advantage can you offer to an NFL team?

WD: I would say that the biggest advantage, if I had to pick just one? Is my determination and work ethic that I carry? I have been on a long and unusual journey and I would like to think that it has helped position me as a more mature-than-usual prospect heading into the draft.

His family came first. Now, will the NFL call?

Walter Dublin and his mother, April Gillespie, hope an NFL team gives the former Sarasota High standout a chance. "I'm not getting nervous," Dublin said. "I just want to do my job."

SARASOTA - He will gather with family and friends for a barbecue at his grandfather's home.

On Saturday, that may be Walter Dublin's only guarantee: eating, waiting and hoping for a phone call he knows may not come. For Dublin is that rarest of species -- a football player who has played little football.

A stellar career at Sarasota High School, five games in the Arena Football League 2, sandwiching a promising college career derailed by a son's love for his mother.

The NFL draft is all about production, persistence and promise.

Dublin is counting on the last two being enough.

"If a team were to ask me why they should pick me," the 21-year-old said, "I'd say I'd like to think my journey has led me to be more mature than the usual prospect.

"A lot of these guys coming out of college, they're big-eyed when they go to the NFL. I've played against adults.

Had Walter known this earlier, he might have remained at Ohio State. But back in Sarasota following spring practice, with his mom having lost her job due to her illness, Walter decided he would stay home and work full time.

"My family is more important," he said.

"His role model was my father," April Dublin said. "My father is the most honorable man I can think of. For him to emulate my father, it makes me proud."

Dublin found work in Sarasota as a personal trainer and membership salesman, putting in 50 hours a week. Once he realized his mom would be OK, Walter called Ohio State about returning.

He didn't get the answer he expected. Flush with new prospects, the Buckeyes told Dublin to look elsewhere.

"I was on scholarship," he said, "and people think it's four years paid for. It's renewable year to year, and they decided not to renew my scholarship."
