DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Vernon looked so-so from what I saw of him tonight. It looked like he knew where the play was but just wasn't there in time to make it. Flacco out ran him on a scramble...

Looks like he is back in there chasing after Troy now....

Flacco didn't outrun shit. Everything Jaws says isn't fucking gospel.

GHOLST TOWN: Curiously, OLB Vernon Gholston unofficially played on only 10 of 35 defensive snaps in the first half, all in nickel and dime packages. The former No. 1 pick, continuing his quiet preseason, was credited with only one assisted tackle for the game.

Calvin Pace continued to start at outside linebacker even though he will have to sit out the first four games due to a league suspension. Gholston is slated to replace Pace in the lineup, but he hasn't had much game time with the starters

I checked the several Jets sites, and they are brutal about Vern.

I hope he can ignore the noise coming of the Big Apple until he feels more comfortable. That City's PR machine can take out lots of good men.

The crazy part is we all watched him play a 4-3 DE, line up across from Jake Long and whip his ass.

I just don't get how someone "loses" the ability it takes to be able to do that or why anyone would want to make him a stand up LB.

Vern was gaining ground quickly so that's pretty misleading. Flacco wasn't pulling away from Vern.

Thanks for repeating that for me....What I am trying to get at here is the need for Vern to make some plays to shut some folks up....if he would have been able to catch him before he ducked out, that would have been huge for him....

probably the same reason that Rodriguez ran a spread option with Threet and Sheridan last year... coaches that are so full of themselves they think they can fit square pegs into round holes and the players ultimately end up paying for it

Are you trying to say Threet and Sheridan can out run Vern G?

I'm not repeating anything. All you said was Flacco outran Vern. I clarified since you didn't for those who didn't see the play or game.

I'm guessing this is why he used the word repeating. :wink2:

Now starting for the Jets ... Vernon Gholston
August 27, 2009

It hardly contained the drama of the quarterback announcement (not that there was much drama in that), but Rex Ryan today indicated that OLB Vernon Gholston will start Saturday night against the Giants.

The pronouncement didn't come with much fanfare. Actually, Ryan didn't mention it until I asked him about Gholston's recent playing time. The former No. 1 pick has been practicing with the starters for the past two weeks, but incumbent Calvin Pace made the start in Baltimore.

But now, with Pace's looming suspension getting closer, the Jets need to get Gholston up to speed. He's expected to start the first games at the "rush" linebacker spot in the Jets' scheme. So it only makes sense to get him time with the first-stringers, no?

Gholston said he didn't know he was starting until I mentioned it to him in the locker room after practice. His reaction? He acted as if he had just learned the price of gas was going up a nickel a gallon; he showed absolutely no emotion. That could be a good thing or a bad thing.

Anyway, it will be his first NFL start.
