DE Ryan Williams (official thread)

I just don't really get it... Isn't Ryan only gonna be a RS soph... I'm guessing he's like #5 on the depth chart right now.. and with two guys leaving next year (Gholston pro) and Barrow... He'd likely see the field plenty next season.. And heck maybe even start if Wilson goes pro..

I know it'd be tough to sit another year, and have to rely on some NFL departures.. But I think playing time would be there his junior and senior years..

Anyway, best of luck to the Ryan

No idea what is in his head, but I think I would be inclined to do the same thing. If a post injury Ryan Willliams is even a fraction slower he could well see kids keep going around him. If I had a dream to play college football for OSU that doesn't mean I might not have an even bigger dream to actually play meaningful minutes of college football wherever that might be.

This seems somewhat painful from MVDad's posts. At least from his posts, it appears that Ryan is 100% Buckeye, loves the team, coaches, etc and leaving OSU wasn't an easy choice for him.

As OH8CH posted, there may be 2 dreams competing here: 1. Play college football and 2. Play for OSU. If one of my sons were in this position, how would I advise them? Honestly, I don't know.

MVDad seemd to make it clear that Ryan feels he might be behind too many great athletes right now. Maybe after rehab he didn't get back to where he was before the injury...I don't know.

Ryan believes that this is in his best interest as a football player and I, along with everyone else here, wish him the best of luck. After reading MVDad's posts, I feel that on some level I "feel" the angst that was in this decision. Ryan will always be a Buckeye!

Best of luck Ryan and continue to make the Buckeye nation proud on the field and in the classroom too!

Won't he lose a year (and maybe more)?

I'm not sure, but won't Ryan have to sit a year after he transfers. That will leave him with only two seasons to play, for a new team, a new coach, getting acclimated to a new school, and with his injury history he is in no way guaranteed to play (or for that matter, to get any scholarship offers). From his dad's two posts, it sounds like this was largely an emotional decision, which I can understand, but is it a good one? There is something to be said for five guaranteed free years of college at a school like Ohio State, especially when weighed against his other options. His dream may never be realized in the way he'd envisioned when he decided to come here, but does that justify possibly making another mistake. Now, I'm not making this point as a selfish fan wanting him to stay, but as a concerned fan who doesn't want to see one of our own do something he'll regret. Thoughts?

Aztecs pluck Ohio State transfer

By: MICHAEL KLITZING - Staff Writer

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State football team has landed Ohio State transfer Ryan Williams, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound defensive end.

Long said Ohio State defensive end Ryan Williams, who prepped at Mission Viejo High, is transferring to San Diego State. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Williams is the older brother of Mission Viejo's Ross Williams, a defensive end who gave an oral commitment to the Aztecs for the 2008 season in June. The elder Williams, who will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out this season due to NCAA transfer rules, has been rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered during the Buckeyes' preparations for the Fiesta Bowl in January 2006.

Six football players no longer on squad
By Mick McGrane (Contact) Union-Tribune Staff Writer
April 7, 2009

San Diego State football coach Brady Hoke said yesterday that six players have left the program since his arrival in December.
Among those missing from the spring roster released yesterday were senior defensive linemen Ryan Williams and Darias Jones, and sophomore Henry Simon.
The Aztecs, who open spring drills tomorrow, lost seven defensive linemen to season-ending injuries last season.
Williams, an Ohio State transfer who arrived at SDSU in 2007, played in three games at defensive end last season before concussion problems sidelined him for the final six contests.
